Can anyone give me more info on this? I have a friend in Canada who was asking about it and I have never heard of it before... thanks!

there is a really cool video on Broadway.com of the show in rehearsals you might want to check that out
It's starting at the Princess of Whales theatre Feb 2nd...same theatre where the Lion King/Hairspray played. Check out www.mirvish.com and click on the LOTR pic.

It is actually a play with music now, isn't it?
I just got my tickets for the end of FEB and I am giddy
...Just thought I'd share.
Last I heard, it was being billed as a 'theatrical event' rather than a musical or a play with music.
I'm holding off on getting tickets for now because they are $120 (orch & mezz seating). That is extremely high for a Toronto based show (in obviously Canadian $$$).
Interesting, I didn't know it was being billed as a "theatrical event". I'm still very curious how this show it gonna come off. It seems like an awful lot of material to compress into a musical, although i'm sure it will be very flashy with lots of spectacle.

taperina, it's the Princess of Wales, no *W*, as in the country, not the mammal.

A family friend is going to be in it and from everything he's told us, he was very impressed with the writing, the music, the cast, and the amazing sets. So I'm excited.
I am going on Feb 2nd. I think it can either be amazing or terrible. But I'm very interested.

I just got back from Toronto and it's insane how much publicity LOTR is getting. Like you know those street signs from NYC 2012 (the ones that hang from flagpoles) - half of them in the city are advertising LOTR and the other half are for Hair.

Yes, Hair. The first large professional production in North America in about 30 years. Will be produced by Canstage starting in March, I believe.

Ya know, I have an aching suspicion that it really is gonna be a musical; but they changed their marketing to emphasize it as a "theatrical event" because the headline "LOTR - THE MUSICAL!" scared a lot of people off (both theatregoers, who think the idea is silly, and LOTR fans, who aren't show queens). From the rehearsal clips I've seen and heard, it still resembles a book musical to me, complete with ballads and dance numbers.
i am seeing this on the 15th- the first show after it closes briefly for 2 days to work out the kinks.
Whoever sees this before me HAS to post about it. I'm dying to know how it is
