I was wondering if anyone knows what the rush policy for The Magdalene is, and if it's worth seeing. Thanks.
In the tepid reviews it has gotten, it has been described as an earnest Bible musical with feminist apocrypha interwoven throughout, so if that's your bag, perhaps one of its employees can take a break from astroturfing this board to answer your question about the rush...

I think these lyrics, from the audio clip of "When All the Sunshine's Gone" on the production's website, can answer the question of whether or not the show is worth seeing:

Beauty is a thought that's overrated
Where someone needs to wear a jewel to feel they have some worth
But if the jewels are tossed away or buried
Does that make them less upon this earth?

Look at me, a man who shepherds sheep
I love to chase the sheep about and leave them out to roam
And though at night my clothes smell like the pasture
Does that mean I should be all alone?

Someday when all the sunshine's gone
Someday when everything around us is covered in a mist
We'll start to see ourselves the way we're supposed to
Where seeing is replaced by how we're kissed

Someday when all the sunshine's gone
Someday when everyone is accepted as who they really are
Our coats won't be a care
The smells up in the air we'll all ignore
When what's inside is what we'll all adore

Goldstar is selling $10.00 tickets to the show at https://www.goldstar.com/shows/456827 (not sure why they call them "free" tickets if you have to pay $10.00 to Goldstar). I would really recommend you find a different show to see. The set design was horrible, singing left a lot to be desired, and most of the acting was very sub-par. For shame that they think they can charge $65.00 off-Broadway prices to this travesty.

It's probably me who you think is the "shill". I saw The Magdalene and started posting about it because it's new. I'm not connected with the show. I'm just very sick of revivals and the complete lack of variety on Broadway. Nobody takes chances anymore and The Magdalene felt like a big chance given its obvious low budget. I say go see it. I got cheap tickets during previews but just paid full price to see it a second time- I think we should be supporting new work if only to let producers know that it's ok to try something that hasn't been done before. Otherwise we'll end up with revivals of revivals and musicals will become even less relevant than they already are. Just sayin'.
Revivals of revivals...you do realize there were only two eligible revivals this past season, yes? LOTS of original shows this year -- and I saw nearly every one of them (on b'way). SO lots of us support new works, just not the masses which make something a "hit")

Oh, dramamama, I didn't mean to make it sound like there's no hope! You're absolutely right! Things have been getting better and better than they have been over the last 10 years for new musicals and I love you for seeing them! But how many of the new musicals were dramatic and how many were comedies? I stand by my opinion that there is not enough variety on Broadway. There's got to be another Light in the Piazza out there somewhere! Or maybe we are culturally still in a post-9/11 escapism frame of mind and not yet ready to cry at the theatre. I guess that's why The Magdalene worked for me. I was very willing to squirt some tears.

I don't know why one is any less valid than the other, if done well. I'm all in favor of supporting new writers and new work, off-Broadway and on Broadway, but I'm not going to go out of my way to support something that I don't think is any good. You're absolutely entitled to your opinion, and certainly things that work for some people don't work for others and vice versa, but I really hate the argument that because we love theater we should support something just because it's original or different. Being original or the product of new writers/unknown actors doesn't make something good.
