It's being broadcast in HD as well if anyone is interested in that. And a commerical that aired right before mentioned that PBS is running an all-day marathon, starting at 1 AM of Met Opera performances on New Year's Day.
So I can spend my day off away from that place watching it?

Posted: 12/29/08 at 10:02pmThe production of DOCTOR ATOMIC currently available on DVD is a filmed version of Peter Sellars' original production of the opera. It is pretty good, for the most part. I saw the Met production and was not impressed, except by the music and performances. I'm currently watching the Met version on HD and am liking it a lot more than I did when I saw it live. We'll see how that second act works on TV, I remember that Act II was the big problem.

Posted: 12/30/08 at 3:21amI didn't care for it when I saw it. I loved the concept, and some of the music, but I thought the execution was stagnant.

Posted: 12/30/08 at 10:21amI thought it worked better on TV than it did on stage, but that didn't keep me from dropping off during that second act. I'm not sure it is possible to stage this piece effectively. It may work better as an oratorio or concert piece. There's a lot of gorgeous and powerful music there, it would be a shame for it to fall completely off the map.

I caught the last half hour on TV last night and couldn't believe how boring it was.
How could people actually sit through it?
