It was the first album to be awarded a Grammy, wasn't it? I remember hearing that somewhere (possibly here).

THE MUSIC MAN won in the category Best Original Cast Recording in 1958, the first year the Grammy Awards were given.

Yes, but I also remember hearing/reading that that was the first Grammy given in any category - anyone know if that's true?

can't find anything that confirms what award was handed out first that year, not even on the official site. Your best bet might be to place a phone call or send a fax to the archives dept at NARAS and perhaps they would be able to reference an old program or production records.
