When I go to star vehicle I expect the star to deliver, and when I saw The Mystery of Love & Sex last night Sam Gold's brilliance was burning as bright as ever. His direction here is on the level of Fun Home and The Flick; some real topnotch stuff. Loved the transitions through place and time. Loved his blocking on that thrust stage. Loved the performances he got out of the four wonderfully cast actors- and after only a few previews no less! When the man is on, he's ON, and his work was one of the many joys the evening had to offer.

The play itself is strong. Yes, it treads some of the same ground of people sitting around discussing racism, sexism, homophobia that so many plays attempt to shed light on, but make no mistake. This is no Clybourne Park (and that's a good thing). These characters feel like real people, having real conversations. There are lots of laughs to be had, especially whenever Tony Shalhoub opens his mouth, but it can get intense too when called for.

All four actors, Tony Shaloub, Diane Lane, Gayle Rankin and Mamoudou Athie (breakout performance) were excellent.

I definitely want to see it again. In fact, they should just Other Desert Cities the whole thing to The Booth next fall so more people can experience it.

Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco. Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!

I've tried for about 8 or 9 performances on LincTix and they all looked sold out. Hm. Let me know if you come across anything!

Does anyone know if this show (or Lincoln Center Theatre Off-Broadway shows in general) do a regular rush at the box office on the day of the performance? LincTix is no surprise sold out for tomorrow, but I'm wondering if there's still a chance I can get student rush tickets. Thanks in advance!

I think I entered in over six different times for performances in April with LicTix and kept getting a message saying no seats were available. I just thought it was because my dates were so close to when the play was closing (but that is when I'll be in the city next). Let me know if anyone has any luck around that time and I'll post likewise !
