Drowsy Chaperone is soon starting its "pre-Broadway" engagement in Los Angeles. Discuss amongst yourselves...
Here are some details of the story from the Canadian production:
The Drowsy Chaperone" begins with a narrator enticing the audience to sit with him while he plays the LP of one of his favorite old-time musicals. He then controls the action, setting the scenes and even skipping through one vaudeville routine he declares was once funny, but is now simply boring.
The story revolves around a Ziegfeld-style producer who's losing his leading lady to marriage, the gangsters who have invested in the show and don't like losing their star one bit, the shady Latin lover brought in to seduce the bride away who falls instead for her chaperone, the chorine who finally gets her big break and an aviatrix ("or feminist, as she's called now"), who serves as a deus ex machina.
Along the way our narrator informs us that, in real life, the bride was married 14 times, the groom was eventually killed by his "longtime companion" and the best man gave evidence at the McCarthy hearings and never worked again.
Well, it's definitely going to be different. I'm seeing it as an Ovation Voter on November 22.
