Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's a rear elevation.
When I first saw the model a few months ago, I hated it. It looked really huge and really tacky. After thinking about it a little more, though, I kind of fell in love with it. It's really a pretty great idea to have a place to sit in the hectic center of the universe, a place to take it all in (if that's even possible). I also love that it pays homage to ancient theatres. I'll miss the old TKTS booth and banners, sure, but I think the new staircase will become an icon in its own right--and one I'll definitely take advantage of (me and my cheap, anti-theatre-district-eatery self can finally sit down with a brown bag lunch without trekking over to Bryant Park when I need to kill time before a matinee! Hoorah!). I'm sure they took garbage (and the homeless) into account when planning such a bold project, so I don't think it will be a problem...I'm sure they'll maintain it well. Overall I think it's a great idea, and I can't wait for it to be done.
