I would put "One" from A Chorus Line on the list.

Hmm...Yes, "One" is a good one. How about "Lullaby of Broadway". I know people are sick of it, but it is the ultimate Broadway song. It discusses the magic of Broadway- the music and lyrics are classic. I would definitely put that one on the list. Perhaps my number one choice would be "42nd Street", probably for the same reasons. BUt my top 5 would be
1)42nd Street
2)There's No Business LIke Show Business
3)Lullaby of Broadway
4) The Impossible Dream
5) This Is The Moment

And although recent, "Gimme Gimme" defines Broadway showstopper.

If off-Broadway counts, "Try to Remember" from The Fantasticks.

Broadway...I'm thinking "Some Enchanted Evening" from South Pacific or "If I Loved You" from Carousel. I'm an R & H kinda chick :)

Can't really pin down one song as the be-all of all show tunes... maybe a few songs to illustrate different moods and musical styles
