Rent is the show that got me to meet the person who's been my inspiration sicne I was 9 and the man who made me feel like my grandmother was with me even though she's been gone for 9 years, tomorrow.
And it's the show that got me to really get into theater more than I was.

Okay, the mockery on this thread is expected, but at this point it's just overkill. It's not necessary on EVERY Rent thread on this board, really. Especially when people actually want to post legitimate things.
I know I was barely 6 years old when it opened. I'm nowhere near being an "original" Renthead. I don't consider myself one anymore, either. After I first saw the show for my 15th birthday almost 3 years ago, I did. I was OBSESSED. I was a fangirl. I was completely ridiculous. Then I grew up.
But that growing up only meant being mature enough not to be a psychotic fangirl. I still adore the show. I really did meet a bunch of my closest friends because of it, and it was the first show I saw that I really LOVED. It's what made me realize what theatre could be, beyond just entertainment, to actually meaning something. To actually making me connect to it... It's the first show that made me cry. I may have "grown out of" being a fangirl, but I haven't grown out of the show.
So even though Rent may not mean a damn thing to all of you mocking it, I'd hope that you'd at least have the decency and maturity to respect the fact that it DOES mean something to people, despite the fact you may not want to admit it.
and everyone has AIDS!
Giving up the chance to take a 6 figure salary and instead pursuing my art.
When I had a close friend commit suicide 2 years ago now, RENT helped me hold hope during those difficult times, and share it through its music with my friends. That's all we listened to for months after it happened- it helped us heal.
When 4 of my close friends came out in the course of about 2 months, RENT guided me through the new experience, and when another tried to kill himself after a failed sexual encounter, we used RENT as a way to help him find faith and something to live for as he recovered.
For those of you that Rent has moved, I'm glad you have those memories and that you found meaningful art in your lifetime. (Really.)
For me, I just think about what might move into the theater next. I never got RENT, and have NO feelings towards it, whatsoever. (I've taken students to NY every year: the years they have chosen Rent as one of their shows: I take off and see something else. There are other chaperones; don't worry!)
