The Novello Rupert? I think you'll find your show is on at The Noel Coward love!

Two shows that one best musical and best revival but couldn't run 3 months between them.

Very gutted that Sister Act did not get any recognition, also gutted for A Little Night Music too.

Delighted that Priscilla got best costume, much deserved, Spring Awakening should of got something (best director, but not even nominated), I thought the directing that drove the SA cast was fantastic, not the casting. SA did not deserve the amount of Oliver's it got.

There told you the two perceived high brow musicals cleaned up, over 2 fun shows.

2010 Olivier's a big disappointment for me, bring 2011 but it probably be the same.

i don't think Spring Awakening was political at all...i really think it was deserving, just because it closed quite quickly doesn't mean the show wasn't good...the performances from that cast were really amazing and i'm glad they've been honored!

You're probably right about the politics comment Sam, I just saw this coming a mile off and I think there's far too much snobbery about some of these awards which means that just because a show is popular it automatically seems to = not worthy.

Plus ca change. Good luck to the winners though.

Seen some shows in my time....

So sad Tony Sheldon didn't get the award he deserves. He was robbed!! Priscilla was the best new musical too. Well done to Hello Dolly, a deserved winner. The audience award should definitely have gone to Billy.

2010 Oliviers a bid dissapointment as were the WOS awards in the main.

I got bored with the speeches, but Maggie Smith was simply fabulous.

Nice little touch with Les Miserable too.

The Official OLIVIERS Thread!

Yeah. Bedtime.

I know now why they don't bother putting these awards on the TV.

A downright rude slap in the face for Patina.

The Official OLIVIERS Thread!

Awwww I'm sad for Sister Act. I had high hopes for Patina. Although I kind of knew it would miss out on the rest, except maybe for Sheila, although I would've loved it to win all of the awards it was nominated for.

Oh well. What can you do. Never saw Spring Awakening, doesn't look like my sort of thing anyway.

I saw Hello Dolly, I liked it, but I would've definitely given the award to Patina.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of Priscilla, I really liked Tony Sheldon's performance and so hoped he'd win.

I LOVE MAGGIE SMITH!!!!!

My constant pressing of refresh to see the results has at least got me a quarter of the way through my nightshift.
Once you start to spread it, Baby, if you let it, Love comes right on back to you . . .

I have to say that out of the best musical bunch i would say the right one won. I dont think it had anything to do with politics etc, in fact quite the opposite, it's not like the Tony's where many times they will award based on touring potential etc, this one won because in a weak year for new musicals it was the best.

I would much rather it go to something with a new score etc than a jukebox musical.

However i do think Tony should have won best actor

No quibbles with Spring Awakening Best Musical, however I would of liked to see sister act get some recognition, it did deserve something?

I would of expected Spring Awakening to of won Best Direction and shocked for it not to win Best Lighting, but these both went to plays, I would like to see plays and musicals split up as they are two seperate genre of entertainment?

I did not think Hello Dolly was better than A Little Night Music.

POL you better check the spelling on your Olivier posting on the Broadway site befere the dragons get to you- if they haven't already.

The Official OLIVIERS Thread!

Cheers I have changed the spelling on the Olivier thread; it is heading towards Broadway obscurity, only two people posted on there.

I am surprised with how lacklustre the Broadway Board is with the Olivier Awards; when it comes to international theatre the Americans seem very inward.

Thats Americans in genral. I remmeber seeing a survey that a high percentage of americans did not have passports because they dont really look out side of the states.

To be fair they have most stuff there lol

Hi guys, please do check out the West End section of the site because all my interviews from last night are going up - chatted with everyone from Mel C to Margaret Tyzack. Had a really nice chat with Ramin and Sierra, who is really excited about all the London theatre, as well as the lovely Phylicia Rashad.

I think less than 25% of US citizens hold a passport.

They do have everything there nice beaches, ski resorts, top amusement park, national sports, the only thing missing is history and to get a developed taste for culture you have to try many flavours or should that be flavors.

There is definitely less interest on the Broadway Board than previous years. I suppose because it's hard for people to get excited over shows they mostly haven't seen.

"I remmeber seeing a survey that a high percentage of americans did not have passports because they dont really look out side of the states."

While there are definitely way too many Americans who take that view, remember that international travel from here can be very expensive. Even a trip to Canada or Mexico can take several hours on a plane depending on where one is coming from. Any country further than that is going to be an even longer journey, which means more money. It's not like the UK where you have so many different countries just a relatively short distance away. The area of Europe is 3,788,027 km2. The area of the US is 9,161,923 km2.

I don't get the whole Spring Awakening thing.

If the show was that good and as it appears from this thread so many people want to see it back, why did it close after just a few weeks?

Reality surely must be that there's no hope of a revival given the money that must have been lost on a short West End run?

"If the show was that good and as it appears from this thread so many people want to see it back, why did it close after just a few weeks?"

I don't understand why people keep saying this. Does this mean the Dirty Dancing's, Mamma Mia's and We Will Rock You's of the West End are all brilliant masterpieces because they're still open?
#197

The Official OLIVIERS Thread!

No

Means Spring Awakening is a brilliant show, just produced awfully, what do you expect if a show has 15 producers.

It just lost momentum after leaving Hammersmith, the show got A+ reviews.

The other shows you mention are tourist attractions and aimed at a particular set of people.
#198

The Official OLIVIERS Thread!

I certainly don't think that the Dirty Dancing's, Mamma Mia's and We Will Rock You's are great shows - they are as has been said for the tourists but I just don't see Spring Awakening as a masterpiece either at least not when i saw it.

Original it certainly is which is good but am just surprised that for a show so popular it seems that it didn't fulfil its promise in the West End.

Just managed to get online very briefly here in NYC and just had to register my sheer delight on SA winning Best Musical. The best West End musical of the decade for my money. Also over the moon for Aneurin Barnard - his performance was way beyond astonishing and I honestly think it would have been criminal had he not won Best Actor in a musical. Iwan Rheon also thoroughly deserved his award. Really gutted that Bill T. Jones's fantastic choreography did not win though.
I've not seen anything in New York yet - just chilling out for a couple of days at my friends' place in Queens before starting my theatre fest.

Over the moon for Spring Awakening and the boys wins, so well deserved. Didnt SA get something ridiculous like 14 5* reviews when in opened? I think that says it all really.
