Break out the leg warmers! The new breed of Xanadu fans—fANADUs, as they’re calling themselves online—want you to “do the ’du!”
Xanadu on Broadway, a campy interpretation of the 1980 movie starring Olivia Newton-John (played by Kerry Butler onstage) as a roller-skating Greek muse who comes down from the heavens to inspire an artist to open a roller disco, opened just yesterday. But 80’s die-hards have been lining up for weeks to see the musical in previews. Douglas Carter Beane, who wrote the book for the stage adaptation of the trippy cult classic, seems charmed bythese “Xanadudes and Xanadudettes.”

The cast is terrific and energetic. Kerry Butler as Clio/Kira laces the character's treacly sweetness with enough satiric acid to be consistently interesting. At times adopting an Australian accent, and executing sophisticated moves on her skates, Butler is a versatile performer who is a treat to watch.

Cheyenne is # 1 on Queer Sighted

What is there to say about Mr. Cheyenne? He's hot, he's tall, he's got an exotic name ... and man, he can act AND sing his way out of a paper bag. Oh yeah, he can roller-skate, too! Currently on Broadway in the mucho-funno, 'Xanadu' (above), the man has the voice of an angel and the bod for sin. And he's proudly out. Love that!

Beane's biggest coup was casting brassy dame Mary Testa and cantankerous Jewess Jackie Hoffman as two "evil" sisters. After one scene in which the scheming pair exits cackling, Hoffman exclaims that it's like "children's theater for 40-year-old gay people," and that just about sums up the show—in the best way possible.

Xanadu is pure cotton candy fun. The costumes are straight out of the '80s with lots of headbands, spandex and legwarmers. Plus, it’s just 90 minutes long with no intermission; you can leave your brain at the door because there’s really not much to think about.

Interview with Curtis Holbrook

Whitney Spaner: Your tap solo in the show is amazing. How long have you been tapping for?
Curtis Holbrook: I actually started tapping when I was two years old. My mom has a dance studio in San Antonio, TX. She put me inside when I was two and didn’t stop until I moved here and then I stopped tapping because there’s not really that much going on [with tap]. With most of the work I was doing, there was literally no tap involved. But when I auditioned for Xanadu I had to tap and it’s just one of those things that comes back to you. I love doing this dance stylistically. This style isn’t going on anymore, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire that whole thing that’s just really light on your feet -- floating across the floor. And especially in a show where I’m playing a Cyclops and a muse and a punk rocker and then I come out and get to do a Gene Kelly tap dance -- it’s great.

Hi All-
Wow ! Start of a new week
I guess we'll see Xanadu again this weekend, but this time were bringing the whole gang from Boston and were all sitting onstage. I guess, probably this will be my last time to see Xanadu till James Carpinello comes back ...
I hope he's back by my birthday .. -j*
