The Olivier Award's Complete Nomination List 2010

I actually think 'Spring Awakening' will do a 'Caroline or Change' and take Best Musical, despite closing nearly a year ago.
Everything in life...is only for now.

Tiggs, I had you on as a odds on favourite for your nod for Priscilla to win best new musical, as you are such a devotee, so shocked when you opted for Sister Act!!!!

Why do you think Aneurin Barnard will garner the sympathy vote Mama? Personally I think it might depend on whether Spring Awakening is rewarded in other categories. But obviously I'm of the opinion that no-one has done more to deserve that award this year than Tony Sheldon.

I was also surprised (perhaps naively so) that Priscilla wasn't included in Set Design and Choreography (and I selected Sister Act for the latter because I enjoyed it, didn't see Hello Dolly, didn't think Oliver was anything special and happen to think that Bill T Jones choreography is completely over-rated)! :-o

i literally sat in disbelieve as i watched 3 "gangsters" step click/box step their way through a whole number (which is incidently the worst song in the show). And i know they're nuns but come on Van Laast...do we really need prayer hands in ever single routine...!! gah..this could've been so good...i'm routing for Spring Awakening this year...best bit of theatre i've seen in a long time, and just cause he's a babe Stephen Mear for choreography!

OK, ok! So maybe I know nothing about choreography (it's a bugger having to buy two left shoes all the time I can tell ya!)...

POL: I love Priscilla to absolute bits, but I genuinely feel Sister Act is more deserving of the accolade for Menken's terrific score. Not a big fan of Spring Awakening, but it'll probably nick it.

And maybe I'm hoping for a bit or karma: if I don't champion Priscilla for Best Musical maybe Tony Sheldon will 'nick' Best Actor. The Olivier Award's Complete Nomination List 2010

I dont care how long ago Spring Awakening closed, if it's in it it should win it. It was one of the best pieces of theatre Ive seen in a long time. If Pricilla wins, I abandon all hope of what the Oliviers stands for.

Could Bob Golding steal the Best Musical Actor nod from under Tony Sheldon's nose?

I loved Tony's performance, but i could quite easily see an upset come Olivier night.

I think the award should go to Alex Hanson but I'm surprised Mark Umbers didn't get a nomination for CHARITY. Or is the Menier not eligible?

OK. I'll start with a positive comment: I'm thrilled for Alexandra Gilbreath. I thought she was a wonderful and hilarious Olivia in a rather hit-and-miss production.

I don't "get" Rory Kinnear but I'm told that's my problem, not his, so I won't complain about his nomination.

Oliver! does not deserve any nominations or awards for the production since 90% of the work was done in 1994. Matthew Bourne's choreography was not considered nomination-worthy then and he's hardly even changed it, so why has he been nominated now? Perhaps they should introduce a "Green Award" for most efficient recycling? (Joke not mine.)

I thought Kelly Price was disappointing in A Little Night Music. Whether that was because of her performance or the direction I don't know, but I didn't think her performance was award-worthy at all. Maureen Lipman deserves her nomination, she was wonderful.

What happened to the award for best ensemble performance? Did they take that away just to piss off us Arcadia fans?

I love Michael Grandage but his production of Hamlet was thoroughly average. Lighting is the only thing I'd think about giving that a nomination for. Jude Law was OK, but again not award-worthy.

I haven't seen The Habit of Art yet, but I thought that was the kind of thing the Oliviers would love, and it got far better reviews than many of the nominated shows. Just surprised it didn't get any nominations at all. I'm seeing it this week so will judge then.

And finally... I am actually shocked that James McAvoy and Rowan Atkinson got nominations. At the performances I saw, those were two "star" performances where the "stars" simply weren't up to the job. Ian McKellen (Waiting for Godot) and Roger Allam (La Cage aux Folles) deserved those nominations. And on the subject of Godot, as Weez said: NO RONALD PICKUP!?

These are actually crapper than the WOS nominations.

The Menier shows usually get nominated when they transfer to the West End, I think it is because it is a fringe venue by SOLT standards whereas Donmar, Royal Court and National are not therefore they can be nominated

Great to see the BEST NEW PLAY category bursting with worthy nominations, particularly after a weak line-up last year.

I'm rooting for

BEST ACTOR IN A MUSICAL OR ENTERTAINMENT:
Alexander Hanson for A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

BEST ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL OR ENTERTAINMENT:
Patina Miller for SISTER ACT

BEST NEW MUSICAL:
SPRING AWAKENING

and

BEST SUPPORTING PERFORMANCE IN A MUSICAL OR ENTERTAINMENT:
Iwan Rheon for SPRING AWAKENING

The latter despite my affection for Shiela Hancock and simply because she could only do so much with Sister Act's weak and underwritten book.

Can't wait 'til Sam graduates. The kid's work is going to kick me into the stratosphere, which is exactly what this audience member wants. The Olivier Award's Complete Nomination List 2010

When the critics awards came out, one of my complaints was that they mix plays and musicals in the creatives, musical theatre is a different genre of stage entertainment to plays and should be judged differently. So how about these categories;

How the hell did Eddie Redmayne get nominated for Best Supporting Actor?

It's a bloody two-hander - the roles both had equal magnitude!!!

And how come Alfred Molina was completely over-looked?

The Olivier Award's Complete Nomination List 2010

James McAvoy lol. That was kind of token, IMO.

No Tara Fitzgerald, Toby Stephens or Christopher Eccleston for A Doll's House?? Wtf. *Someone* from Hamlet should be getting some supporting nods.

And Keira, seriously?? Ugh. I wish she'd pull a Gwyneth Paltrow on us and become irrelevant just disappear off the face of the planet. Sorry, I know that's bound to anger.

I like to imagine it's because they've already decided he's going home with a prize, but they didn't think they could get away with awarding him over Rylance. And at least Eddie Redmayne in the supporting category makes a LOT more sense than putting frickin' Malvolio in the lead category!

And how come Alfred Molina was completely over-looked?

'Cos the leading actor category is too freakin' strong for everyone to get past the longlist? Because Redmayne was so transcendent he ended up making Molina look almost amateurish in comparison? The Olivier Award's Complete Nomination List 2010

*Someone* from Hamlet should be getting some supporting nods.

Really? Who would you suggest? Because the only actor who was more than a pale bland cipher reciting lines in characterless fashion was the lead. On both occasions I saw it. I wish I could forget the disappointment I felt at the supporting cast; I mean, I've practically forgotten them as it is, so why should the memories of the disappointment remain?!

Im still in shock/disappointment how bad this year's nominations are! They've gone for the complete celebrity treatment!
If Eddie Redmayne's not winning, I'm gona kill someone! How the hell is Oliver Thornton NOT nominated but Mel C & Keira Knightley are????? There are TONS of better takeovers this past year in the West End... all the ones from La Cage for instant, Ruthie in Chicago..etc
