Can't believe Oliver Thornton didn't get nominated for supporting role in Priscilla. Also that Priscilla/Sister Act are both missing from the Set nominations.

#16

The Olivier Award's Complete Nomination List 2010

Is this legit? You'd think it'd be on OfficialLondonTheatre.co.uk before BroadwayWorld.com or DailyMail.co.uk. But then, it (probably) is Baz, so it's hard to doubt. Uh-oh, here come opinions!

BEST ACTRESS
Gillian Anderson for A DOLL'S HOUSE at the Donmar
Lorraine Burroughs for THE MOUNTAINTOP at Trafalgar Studios 1
Imelda Staunton for ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE at Trafalgar Studios 1
Juliet Stevenson for DUET FOR ONE at the Almeida and Vaudeville
Rachel Weisz for A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE at the Donmar

One day, I WILL see all the Best Actress nominees in plays. But I just keeping missing out here and there. I've only seen two, but I don't think that really affects my opinion that Rachel Weisz is likely to take home a Larry (we should popularise that; I'm fed up having to say "Olivier awards" when Americans get to say "Tony" and movie buffs get "Oscar").

BEST ACTOR
James Earl Jones for CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF at the Novello
Jude Law for HAMLET, Donmar at Wyndham
James McAvoy for THREE DAYS OF RAIN at the Apollo
Mark Rylance for JERUSALEM at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court and now at the Apollo
Ken Stott for A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE at the Duke of Yorks
Samuel West for ENRON at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court and now at the Noel Coward

This is a very strong category, and I personally favoured Ken Stott for the longest time. But as incredible as his Eddie Carbone was, I don't see any way for anyone to beat Mark Rylance here. Effin' go see Jerusalem if you haven't already, y'all!

BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Hayley Atwell for A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE at the Duke of Yorks
Michelle Dockery for BURNT BY THE SUN at the Lyttelton
Alexandra Gilbreath for TWELFTH NIGHT at the Duke of Yorks
Keira Knightley for THE MISANTHROPE at the Comedy
Rachael Stirling for THE PRIORY at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court
Ruth Wilson for A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE at the Donmar

Why does Keira Knightley get a nomination when she was simply playing herself in verse? That's almost insulting to the other fabulous ladies in this category. I'd love to see Alexandra Gilbreath take it, but Atwell and Wilson are more than worthy also.

BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Mackenzie Crook for JERUSALEM at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court and now at the Apollo
Rory Kinnear for BURNT BY THE SUN at the Lyttelton
Tim Pigott-Smith for ENRON at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court and now at the Noel Coward
Eddie Redmayne for RED at the Donmar

And this is where I get mad. WHAT THE SHIZZLE IS THIS?! DID YOU EFFERS NOT *SEE* WAITING FOR GODOT?! RONALD PICKUP IS GIVING THE FINEST PERFORMANCE ON ANY STAGE IN LONDON RIGHT NOW, AND HE DOESN'T EVEN GET A LOUSY NOMINATION?! WHAT A FRICKIN' *JOKE*! If anyone other than Eddie Redmayne takes this, I'm going to sulk. Although I suppose it'd be a shorter sulk if Mackenzie Crook takes it than if Rory Bloody Kinnear or the admittedly-great Tim Pigott-Smith wins; Jerusalem is Just That Good, y'all.

BEST NEW PLAY
ENRON by Lucy Prebble at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court and now at the Noel Coward
JERUSALEM by Jez Butterworth at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court and now at the Apollo
THE MOUNTAINTOP by Katori Hall at Trafalgar Studios 1
RED by John Logan by at the Donmar Warehouse

Oh, wonderful! I've seen them all! The Olivier Award's Complete Nomination List 2010 My vote goes to Jerusalem. Enron is certainly very good, but it really lacks that zing, that emotional connection, that would justify the constant 5-star hype it's getting. I did love The Mountaintop, but it feels quite under-doggy. And I enjoyed Red, but don't disagree with the opinion that it's wholly the performers that made it worthwhile.

BEST NEW COMEDY
CALENDAR GIRLS by Tim Firth at the Noel Coward
ENGLAND PEOPLE VERY NICE by Richard Bean at the Olivier
PARLOUR SONG by Jez Butterworth at the Almeida
THE PRIORY by Michael Wynne at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court

Oh, WHAT?! England People Very Nice is one of the most horrible plays I've ever seen. Simply awful, I still wish I'd left at the interval. I've not seen any of the others, but I rather hope it's one of the latter two.

BEST MUSICAL REVIVAL
Irving Berlins ANNIE GET YOUR GUN music and lyrics by Irving Berlin, book by Herbert and Dorothy Fields at the Young Vic
HELLO DOLLY! book by Michael Stewart, music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, based on the play The Matchmaker by Thornton Wilder at the Open Air
A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by Hugh Wheeler, suggested by a film by Ingmar Bergman, originally produced and directed on Broadway by Harold Prince at the Garrick
Lionel Barts OLIVER! based on the original production by Sam Mendes at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane

Smart money is on Hello Dolly!, I guess.

BEST NEW MUSICAL
DREAMBOATS AND PETTICOATS book by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran at the Savoy
PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT THE MUSICAL book by Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott, based on the Latent Image/Specific Films motion picture distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. at the Palace
SPRING AWAKENING music by Duncan Sheik, book and lyrics by Steven Sater, based on the play by Frank Wedekind at the Novello
SISTER ACT music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater, book by Cheri Steinkellner and Bill Steinkellner at The London Palladium

What, no nomination for Ernie Get Your Gun? Shame. :P I'd like to see it go to Spring Awakening, but I really can't say I'm that fussed.

BEST ENTERTAINMENT
Arturo Brachetti: CHANGE written and directed by Sean Foley, original concept by Serge Denoncourt, based on the repertoire of Arturo Brachetti at the Garrick
Derren Brown: ENIGMA written by Derren Brown and Andy Nyman at the Adelphi
MORECAMBE by Tim Whitnall at the Duchess

Fun fact! Tim Whitnall is probably more famous to y'all as the alien Angelo from classic kids TV show Mike and Angelo. (Also, Michael Benz who played Mike could be seen at the Globe last summer; watch out for As You Like It hitting cinemas near you!)

BEST ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL OR ENTERTAINMENT
Melanie C for BLOOD BROTHERS at the Phoenix
Patina Miller for SISTER ACT at the London Palladium
Samantha Spiro for HELLO DOLLY! at the Open Air
Hannah Waddingham for A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC at the Garrick
Charlotte Wakefield for SPRING AWAKENING at the Novello

Ehhhhh. Bored. Miller or Spiro.

BEST ACTOR IN A MUSICAL OR ENTERTAINMENT
Rowan Atkinson for OLIVER! at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane
Aneurin Barnard for SPRING AWAKENING at the Novello
Bob Golding for MORECAMBE at the Duchess
Alexander Hanson for A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC at the Garrick
Tony Sheldon for PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT THE MUSICAL at the Palace

It'd better be Sheldon. I could maybe forgive a Hanson win.

BEST SUPPORTING PERFORMANCE IN A MUSICAL OR ENTERTAINMENT
Sheila Hancock for SISTER ACT at the London Palladium
Maureen Lipman for A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC at the Garrick
Kelly Price for A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC at the Garrick
Iwan Rheon for SPRING AWAKENING at the Novello

Ohhh, Kelly Price please! I love her, she's wonderful in everything. <3 <3 <3 Although any of them could take it and I wouldn't mind that much.

BEST DIRECTOR
Rupert Goold for ENRON at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court and now at the Noel Coward
Michael Grandage for HAMLET, Donmar at Wyndhams
Lindsay Posner for A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE at the Duke of Yorks
Ian Rickson for JERUSALEM at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court and now at the Apollo
Bijan Sheibani for OUR CLASS at the Cottesloe

With Jerusalem touching people on a human level, that puts Enron as serious competition in the more technical categories (although I will appear to change my mind a little further down the page XD). So my money's on Goold. I'll be upset if Grandage takes it; not because I don't love Grandage (I really really do!), but because Hamlet just wasn't very good.

BEST REVIVAL
ARCADIA directed by David Leveaux at the Duke of Yorks
CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF directed by Debbie Allen at the Novello
THE MISANTHROPE directed by Thea Sharrock at the Comedy
A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE directed by Rob Ashford at the Donmar Warehouse
A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE directed by Lindsay Posner at the Duke of Yorks
THREE DAYS OF RAIN directed by Jamie Lloyd at the Apollo

I do hope Arcadia takes this. For a while, it was possible to go to London and see War Horse, or La Cage aux Folles, or Arcadia, and while this was possible, the world was simply a more beautiful place. How sad that this is Arcadia's only nomination. The Olivier Award's Complete Nomination List 2010

BEST THEATRE CHOREOGRAPHER
Matthew Bourne for OLIVER! at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane
Bill T Jones for SPRING AWAKENING at the Novello
Anthony Van Laast for SISTER ACT at the London Palladium
Stephen Mear for HELLY DOLLY! at the Open Air

I support the Bill T. Jones choreography for Spring Awakening. But I'm not interested in having that argument AGAIN, so I'll just shrug my shoulders prettily and move on. No plays are nominated, so I have no one to cheer for. But at least those who were offended by Black Watch and War Horse winning can rest safe in the knowledge a musical will get this award this year. (Although if you were offended by that and support Spring Awakening, then you're a wee bit hypocritical. I've not actually read everyone else's thoughts yet, so I'm just sayin'. Pre-emptive like. The Olivier Award's Complete Nomination List 2010 )

BEST LIGHTING DESIGN
BURNT BY THE SUN designed by Mark Henderson at the Lyttelton
ENRON designed by Mark Henderson the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court and now at the Noel Coward
SPRING AWAKENING designed by Kevin Adams at the Novello
THREE DAYS OF RAIN designed by Jon Clark at the Apollo

Spring Awakening, please. Enron's was good, but made my eyes squiffy.

BEST SET DESIGN
ENGLAND PEOPLE VERY NICE designed by Mark Thompson
ENRON designed by Anthony Ward at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court and now at the Noel Coward
JERUSALEM designed by Ultz at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court and now at the Apollo
RED designed by Christopher Oram at the Donmar Warehouse

I know Ultz is loved by no one, but his set for Jerusalem is genuinely brilliant. Maybe if we reward him when he does good, we can mend his ways!

BEST COSTUME DESIGN
HELLO DOLLY! designed by Peter McKintosh at the Open Air
MADAME DE SADE designed by Christopher Oram, Donmar at Wyndhams
THE MISANTHROPE designed by Amy Roberts at the Comedy
PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT- THE MUSICAL designed by Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner at the Palace

I rather suspect there'll be internet-based uproar if Priscilla doesn't take this one. As a fan of the curtain call costumes, I might even consider joining in. ;D

BEST SOUND DESIGN
EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR designed by Christopher Shutt at the Olivier
JERUSALEM designed by Ian Dickinson for Autograph at the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs at the Royal Court and now at the Apollo
MOTHER COURAGE AND HER CHILDREN designed by Andrew Bruce and Nick Lidster for Autograph at the Olivier
SPRING AWAKENING designed by Brian Ronan at the Novello

Jerusalem, please. Seriously, this play looks, sounds, and smells exactly like a clearing in a Wiltshire wood. It's a remarkable achievement; any play where you get to an interval and are genuinely conscious of the frickin' amazing sound design deserves every award it can get.

THE AUDIENCE AWARD FOR MOST POPULAR SHOW
BILLY ELLIOT music by Elton John, books and lyrics by Lee Hall at the Victoria Palace
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA music and book by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart, book and additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe at His Majestys
WAR HORSE based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, adapted by Nick Stafford at the New London
WE WILL ROCK YOU based on the songs of Queen, by Ben Elton in collaboration with Brian May and Roger Taylor at the Dominion
WICKED music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, book by Winnie Holzman at the Apollo Victoria

Foregone conclusion, right? Wicked is going to take it. And with the name "most popular show", that's not even going to be an inaccurate or undeserved win. I still voted for War Horse and would rather see it triumph, but I'm not holding my breath.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN AN AFFILIATE THEATRE
Soho Theatre/ Tiata Fahodzi for IYA ILE (THE FIRST WIFE)
The Tricycle Theatre for THE GREAT GAME
The Royal Court for COCK at the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs

I am NEVER GOING TO HEAR THE END OF IT if Cock wins. I might never hear the end of it if it doesn't win. XD

And I've skipped opera and dance, because the ONLY opinion I have is "well, I liked Turandot, no matter what the critics thought". :3

How come plays get two categories for supporting performance, and musicals still have guys and gals lumped in together? Well, at least they've started acknowledging that supporting performers come in at least two different shapes and sizes, so I guess (hope) it's a work in progress.

Words seriously cannot express how furious I am that Ronald Pickup lacks nomination. I know I tried, but that is but the merest moiety of my rage.

GO SEE JERUSALEM, Y'ALL.

The Olivier Award's Complete Nomination List 2010

Someone LIKED Donovan's performance in Priscilla? I thought most people thought he was a deer caught in the headlights?

I'm a little surprised by Mel C's nomination, but I hear she's great and thus it's not entirely undeserved. Anyone seen the actual rules for the Oliviers? What other female lead performances would have been nominated instead? Perhaps Helen Dallimore for Most Stoic Performer In The Face Of Untrustworthy Pirate Girls?

Baseless predictions:

ACTRESS
Rachel Weisz will complete her awards sweep. Then she will have an amicable split with her husband and marry me in a whirlwind romance.

ACTOR
Mark Rylance, duh. He'll proceed to make a speech summarising the plot of The Little Prince, or read a poem in Hungarian, or something else Crazy And Wacky, because that's his schtick.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Tough call. I'll go with Ruth Wilson, unless the awards committee decides to award Knightley for being perfectly adequate.

SUPPORTING ACTOR
When is Harry Lloyd going to get nominated for this? The man deserves it already. In his absence, I'll pull a name out the air and pick Redmayne, because it'll look good on the publicity for RED's Broadway transfer.

NEW PLAY
Probably Enron, so they can give Jez Butterworth the comedy prize as consolation.

NEW COMEDY
See above. DEFINITELY not England People Very Nice...

MUSICAL REVIVAL
Blimey, can't believe Night Music's not been through the awards mill yet. Probably that, or Dolly.

MUSICAL
Spring Awakening.

ENTERTAINMENT
Arturo Brachetti I think. Morecambe wasn't as well received in London as it was in Edinburgh, and Derren Brown was ages ago.

MUSICAL ACTRESS
Hannah Waddingham. Everyone thinks she's marvellous and rightly so.

MUSICAL ACTOR
Maybe Tony Sheldon if he's as good as y'all think he is. My money's on Alex Hanson or Rowan Atkinson, personally.

MUSICAL SUPPORTING (nice, no split between the genders!)
Sheila Hancock, because she's Sheila Hancock. Would prefer Iwan Rheon, who was great.

DIRECTOR
Rupert Goold, la di da.

REVIVAL
Arcadia, pleeeeeeease. Or Streetcar. But Arcadia!

CHOREOGRAPHER
How on earth does Matt Bourne get nominated for doing next to nothing? Mear for me.

No idea on the technical awards, although I think Spring Awakening should win for sound design because everything was marvellously clear and understandable despite the rock score (I'm looking at you, Desperately Seeking Susan, and your incomprehensibly bad sound design).

MOST POPULAR SHOW
The Wicked fangirls will stuff the ballot box.

AFFILIATE THEATRE
Cock, for being good despite its title.

Alas, the opera and dance awards are beyond me this year. Really should try and get into opera at some point.

Nooo, his schtick is Louis Jenkins prose poetry (http://www.newsfromnowhere.com/louisjenkins1.html ). Wonder if there's a scientific method for working out which one he'll use next, or if the bookies would mind me placing a cheeky five-pound bet?

The Olivier Award's Complete Nomination List 2010

Wow somebody likes Kelly Price?! Always found her to be so dull on stage, always looks like she'd rather be elsewhere and her acting tends to be full of the same expressions. Her best performance was in The Misanthrope, where she was passable. Each to their own I guess though

TIGGOSAURUS!! Anthony Van Laast!?

That boy needs to go back to choreography camp and learn how to do something contemporary (as in new not contracting, relaxation flexed foot please) and original. The costumes/performances/set/theatre/marquee/ice cream boy/the walk in the rain and the train journey home interested me more than the choreography in Sister Act! bleurgh bleurgh bleurgh!

The Olivier Award's Complete Nomination List 2010

See Mama I think they are right not to nominate Priscilla for set, there actually isnt much of it aside from the bloody great bus. Sure its well done, but does a bus alone make it worthy of an award?! I dont think so personally. I do agree that Tony Sheldon should win for his touching and funny portrayal as Bernadette
