How gutting is it to fly over New York and know I am not going to be there? This is what happened to me on Friday afternoon, I felt like a Rabbi without his Kippah, a Bishop without his Mitre.
Anyway Landed late at Washington Dulles and on top of that a two hour queue to get through the Department of Homeland Security at the airport, bad omen to start.
As the norm for Washington, there is not much theatre to boast about, however last night I was at the Ford Theatre, to see Alan Menken and Howard Ashman excellent 'Little Shop of Horrors, which I really enjoyed.
Anyway back to New York, my favourite article of the year has came out in the New York Times, which for once I read in my complimentary paper this morning; where Brantley and Isherwood peculate this years Tony Awards, like they do every year.
Scripps, I assume you mean the Kennedy Center. There's often some great musical theater on view there but at the moment I think it's a series of classical music concerts. Phantom, I think Washington does actually have a great theater scene (not as much as in NYC obviously but pretty good nonetheless). As well as the JFK Center and Ford's Theater, there's the National Theatre (where Dreamgirls will be playing in July - though there's not much on there right now, I admit). And then there's the fantastic Signature Theatre in Arlington (where I saw two of the best productions I've seen anywhere in recent years - Kander & Ebb's The Visit and The Happy Time). Title of Show is one of the productions currently playing at the Signature.
But I'm sure Little Shop was a great little show for you to see during your short sojourn in DC. Hope the ghost of Lincoln in Ford's Theater did not bother you too much during the show. LOL

I will only go to the Ford Theatre for the revival of Our American Cousin.
Bonus points to any Brit who can figure out what I'm talking about historically.

The two times I have been to Washington, there has been nothing showing, this is the first time I have been DC and a show has been on, which was great it was a iconic off-Broadway show.
I tend to think Las Vegas, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston all have a far healthier theatre scene. It has always surprised me the lack of theatre in Washington and even more so in Florida.
I'll know tomorrow if I go to Frisco on Friday? I know 'Wicked' and 'In THe Heights' are both on. Frisco has lots other little entertainment treats going on all the time.
Well Mamma, if I remember my basic US history correctly, Our American Cousin was so well received by the critics that the assassination of Lincoln was just proof that people were killing to get tickets. :)

"But apart from that, Mrs. Lincoln, what did you think of the play?"

The curtain goes up in 27 minutes for In The Heights at The Curran Theatre and The Phantom will be there. I will see Wicked tomorrow. I am not a lover of both shows, but it is great to see two great San Francisco Theatres and see what's a touring and a semi touring show looks like away from The West End and Broadway.
The Curran Theatre is a beautiful theatre. I've seen a few shows there including 'Jersey Boys' and the ill fated 'Lestat' by Elton John. Never been to the Orpheum where you'll see 'Wicked'. The Golden Gate theatre is a pretty horrible building inside and out.
My hotel is in Union Square, I can see Macy's which is adorned in a big banner of Peter Pan, which played London last year. Don't know how well this is being received here.
I am going to take a walk over to Union Square where The TKTS booth is selling Wicked tickets for $56 at the Orpheum Theatre.
In The Heights was very good and exactly the same set wise as Broadway. The Curran Theatre is beautiful.
I saw "Dame Edna - Back With A Vengeance" at the Curran and "The Lion King" at the Orpheum in San Fran. Never been to the Golden Gate though. Phantom, have you ever seen "Beach Blanket Babylon"? It's a great, funny, topical show that is constantly updated and has some of the most incredible costumes, especially hats, you'll ever see.
FYI, I have performed in the Kennedy Centre, went out as a live webcast!
'Blanket' is fab! But a bitch to get tickets for even after 30 odd years. Its in a smallish cabaret venue called Club Fugazi and is really worth trying to get seats for. They do 2 shows most nights.
Sadly the outrageous Val Diamond has retired from the show now after 10000 performances!
The whole production closed down in 1994 and moved to London. On its 20th anniversary it played a 2 week season at the Arts Theatre as part of the Covent Garden Festival. The Arts was a perfect fit for the show and seats were sold out 5 months in advance.
I am staying at the Chancellor Hotel, managed to grab myself a ticket for $56 for Wicked, what a bore, it just gets worse, staging aside and a few songs the show is simple mind numbing, like one of those fancy Easter Eggs, all glitzy packaging, then you find the taste of the chocolate cheap and hollow at the core. 'Lucky In The Heights', just gets better.
I would liked to of caught 'Back With a Vengeance', but tomorrow night is my last night and promised I take my mom out.
Sorry, Phantom. But I couldn't disagree more about Wicked - it's full of sensational songs with mindblowing melodies and seriously fantastic lyrics. And the book has more depth of subtext than most other blockbuster musicals. Obviously I can't comment on the SF production but Wicked is a genuinely brilliant piece of musical theatre. Of course, like everything, it's a matter of individual taste. I find the Phantom Of The Opera score mindnumbingly boring (and the lyrics are REALLY awful)- definitely a show that's all gimmick and very little substance. Clearly millions disagree with me on that one LOL.
Though I'm pleased to see that now you really like In The Heights - glad I helped to persuade you to go see it in the first place!

Cheers I knew that Wicked hadn't played the Orpheum before, but wasn't sure what San Fran theatre Wicked tried out in, I was going to look it up on Wilky in fact, so saved me a job.
I was going to post some pictures of San Francisco theatres, but was not sure how you do that?
