The Playboy of the Western World (I realize it isn't Wicked or Jersey Boys)

Can anyone tell me about this play? I recently checked it out from my university's library, but I haven't started reading it yet. My school's doing it next year. What are some of your thoughts on the show. I know that the author is from Ireland, but does the show involve accents?

Read it first.

I personally think it is a quasi-compelling piece on paper, but I have never seen a production that does the work justice. It is done a lot regionally as well.

Yeah, i started reading it, but I find it sort of difficult to grasp. I was hoping someone could shed some light on the show, and just sorta give me an outline of what's happening.

I just got done reading the play. I'm a fairly confused. The dialogue is hard to get because a lot of it is backwards from the way we speak today. I just don't get the play. Can someone give me a brief synopsis of the play? Just to help me formulate my own opinion of the show. My school is doing it in the fall and I really would like to be a part of it. The charcter I understand the most is SHANEEN. I understand his objective in the play, but I'm a little confused on the rest.

I hate this play. Seriously. I know that's not very helpful, but I just had to take this opportunity to say that. It's not funny. It's annoying. And stupid. Maybe it was entertaining to Irish people a hundred years ago, but I can't imagine why anyone would ever get enjoyment out of watching this thing.

And yes, there are accents involved. These characters are so Irish they make the Lucky Charms leprachaun look like Uncle Sam. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Irish people. Just the Irish people in this play.

It kinda explores the mythos of Irish masculinity ie what makes a man a MAN.(esp to women) It does tend to show the Irish in what would now be considered very parochial manner butin the deep country I'm reliably told its no much different. There is also Irish nationality issues but hell EVERY thing written about Ireland is about nationhood.

I can see the masculinity issues - with Shawnee and Chris, but I just don't really get what's going on with this play. I didn't realize it was intended to be funny. I thought it was a drama.

Ugh, I'm so confused.
