Anyone see this weeks grosses? The Producers is back up...if it can keep this up for a little while longer, maybe it won't close as early as everyone's been saying.
What are your guys thoughts on Chicago staying open?

Whole thread on the grosses right here

But I'm confused, why would Chicago not stay open? With grosses like that after so long and with such minimal costs and large profit, I don't see it going anywhere for a little while.

Posted: 2/28/06 at 11:33amThe Producers was NEVER in danger of closing. That rumor was started by a bunch of buzzards circling the theatre who don't care for the show and basically were engaging in wishful thinking. As I said many times through all of this, business is ALWAYS off during January and February, especially for long-running shows that are very reliant on the tourist dollar. Hits like The Lion King, Chicago, Hairspray, DRS, Piazza, Doubt and others all saw their percentages dip into the 50s and 60s during the same period. The Producers had 4 off weeks -- two of which were still profitable. It's now back to normal and like it or not, it ain't going anywhere for a few years. Sorry to disappoint the vultures.

Posted: 2/28/06 at 8:30pmI dunno why, its just crazy to hear it will stay open for 4-5 more years. I'm just sorta stick of these shows running FOREVER. Just tour the show for 5 years and open up some of the theaters. I even think RENT should close after its anniversary in April.

Well CHICAGO has a very successful tour, and is still successfully running in London - and it will be changing theatres shortly in the Westend - which shows it still has a lot of life left there and on Broadway.
The tour is still a smash too.
It just can't be stopped.

Posted: 2/28/06 at 11:47pmWell, since Broadway is a BUSINESS, I don't see what's wrong if a show runs a while...although I agree anything running 20+ years may sound a bit extreme, there's nothing wrong with a very long run if the show is popular with audiences, makes money, and continues to employ people. Broadway isn't like what it used to be, with shows running a few years or so then closing. It has developed into something bigger these days and is more about the money.
