Perhaps it is indeed the winter doldrums and it will magically bounce back - but because the huge drop coincides with the failure of the film at the box office, it makes it an even more interesting observation.

The show is dreadful...even with Lane and Broderick, Martin Short and Jason Alexander, or anyone!!!
i don't wish any show to close because that is evil. But i would like to see better shows on Broadway. That i can't deny.
i wouldn't even see this show again if Brooke Shields played the sweedish woman.

Posted: 2/9/06 at 12:15pmThat's the thing DAME -- people keep talking about bringing in replacements - but Jason Alexander and Martin Short couldn't sell the show out in Los Angeles, when the property was still numero uno hot ticket. I'm just not really sure who you could bring in that would really be worth their salaries.

Posted: 2/9/06 at 12:16pmJason Alexander is one of the best actors IMO, and his voice is amazing. He was brilliant. I just hated the show. Where did u see him?

i saw him in LA too. I think he is one of Broadway's best talents.

Posted: 2/9/06 at 12:37pmWell.. thats the only place he did it. The LA run sort of killed any desire to have him do it somewhere else. ( And I am sure he felt the same way.. Can't imagine he was a happy camper).

I adore Jason and had the pleasure to perform with him, but he wasn't up to the role. I did think Martin Short was fun, though I have always been a big fan of his.
It's time for the show to close...they had a good run.....

Jason Alexander I think would certainly help the box office. It doesn't really matter what anyone from here thinks of his performance in the show previously, any tourists coming into NY know immediately who he is from television and would be interested to see him in The Producers over say Sweeney Todd or even The Color Purple.
One of the reasons the show didn't sell out in L.A. was that it was in that huge barn of a joint The Pantages. There aren't too many shows that have sold out that place.

Posted: 2/10/06 at 5:01amI could never understand all the shouting and screaming about THE PRODUCERS. It's not a bad show, but all the hype led me to expect something better.

The big problem with the show is the role of Max is like boot camp - Not every 'funny guy' can pull it off. It's a hard role that routinely shreads the voice of anyone who attempts it. I think Nathan's voice has been permanantly damaged by it, and poor Richard Kind sounded like he was going through the death rattle when I saw him late in his run.
I think the only Max that has gotten through the run without blowing his voice out was Brad Oscar.

I think Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal are being considered as replacements this summer. Not sure where I heard it, but maybe it was on another board. Wouldn't that be crazy?
P.S. -- Peeps know I'm kidding, right? This is all too serious for me. Between the daggers people put in LESTAT for sucking and the ones they're plunging into THE PRODUCERS for being a success, I gotta wonder...
