Posted: 1/23/06 at 5:44pmWith the other movie musicals, the interest was perpetuated and the attendance in NYC was boosted. But, the opposite seems to be happenng for The Producers. Why do you think is the result? I think it would be easy to ignore the existence of the film and still want to see the show, if you weren't impressed by the movie. I'm not asking for pointless negativity, just a simple discussion.
...And so, there I was at the stage door for "Equus". The enthused avalanche of "Harry Potter" fans was literally pushing me into the barricades. As I was thrust face-first into Daniel Radcliffe's hat, I suddenly felt the thumb of a lanky gentleman behind me pressing firmly into my back. It was then that I realized that both of his hands had Playbills, and that both arms were outstretched in front of me...

Posted: 1/23/06 at 5:48pmI think it's hard to judge accurately as it's January and every show took a big dive this week. When the big shows start to climb back up, what happens to The Producers then will be the real litmus test.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

Posted: 1/23/06 at 5:49pmI think it was probably hurt by the fact that many of the reviews described the movie as a near-exact replica of the show. Given the choice between a movie ticket that costs $10 and a theater ticket that costs $110, most people will choose the former.

Posted: 1/23/06 at 5:49pmWell, The Producers was based on a much beloved film to begin with whereas Rent and most other movie musicals were not. One can wonder if that had any effect on BO Receipts as well.

Posted: 1/23/06 at 5:58pmWell looking at the BO numbers from last week it didn't seem to be of any help, where as RENT received a definite boost from the movie.
"You just can't win. Ever. Look at the bright side, at least you are not stuck in First Wives Club: The Musical. That would really suck. "

Posted: 1/23/06 at 6:31pmthe hype for Broderick/Lane was so high that I think it sorta hurt the tour/Broadway. Granted, its not the Producers is going to close tommrow or even this year, but I think its hard knowing that Broderick/Lane set the standard on B'way and now the film, so they sorta expect that out of the ppl they see.
