Does anybody have or know where I can find a picture of the actual Mama Rose? YES, I tried google, but since I dont know how she really looks like, I dont know if it's an actress or the real deal.
I think there's a photo in the autobiography "Gypsy" which should be around in paperback at second hand bookstores.
You can buy the autobiography NEW on Amazon for only 12.89

<--- Dolores Gray was the REAL Madame Rose. Or so she said: "No else could could play the PSYCHOLOGY!"

I'm insulted!
I'm not authorized to view the page either! Whatup wit dat?
Ok...I think I fixed it. Let me know if you can see it now.
Aww there she is. I bet she was a tough cookie.
Supposedly, from people who actually remember her...Linda Lavin's portrayal was closest to the "real" Rose.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I adored Linda Lavin's Rose! That is interesting to hear that it was the closest to what she was really like. Didn't I read somewhere that Rose dyed her hair blonde from time to time too?
Darn double post! Argh!!!
That is, when Linda Lavin actually showed up...
Rose was a Lesbian!
(And a bitch!)
Luoise and Rose never got along, despite the horrific ending of Gypsy - glamourizing a patch that was never made. Rose was ashamed of Louise and was never afraid to admit that...and Louise was not thrilled with "Gypsy"...
But, Rosalind Russell and Gypsy Rose Lee actually played in The Trouble With Angels together.
Justice, have you read Gypsy? If I recall correctly, both Gypsy and her mother were both pretty pleased with the show.
It's a beautifully written book. Read it, if you haven't.
Ga,
i have not read Gypsy, but I did read the Vanity Fair article that stated that Louise gave them the rights to do the musical, but when she saw it on opening night, she regretted it, due to the fact that it was not an accurate telling of their relationship.
and, i have to correct you:
"both Gypsy and her mother were both pretty pleased with the show."
Actually, the show opened in 1959. Rose died in 1954. She was never around to see her life glamourized.
