Regional Premiere of a New Comedy
REASONS TO BE PRETTY
By Neil LaBute
Sept. 29-Oct. 24, 2010
Nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play of 2009, Reasons To Be Pretty, a love story about the impossibility of love, introduces us to Greg, who really, truly adores his girlfriend, Steph. Unfortunately, he also thinks she has a few physical imperfections, and when he casually mentions them, all hell breaks loose. A hopelessly romantic drama about the hopelessness of romance, Reasons To Be Pretty is a gorgeous play.
A Madcap Romp Through The Holiday Season
EVERY CHRISTMAS STORY EVER TOLD
By Michael Carleton, Jim FitzGerald and John K. Alvarez
Nov. 17-Dec. 19, 2010
Join us for this fast-moving, irreverent comedy that takes holiday cheer to the extreme! Every Christmas Story Ever Told is a fond and furious look at the holiday classics and traditions we all remember. From Frosty to Rudolph and the Grinch to It's A Wonderful Life, no pop culture holiday icon is spared in this whirlwind of holiday merriment.
Classic Drama Reimagined
ON THE WATERFRONT
By Budd Schulberg with Stan Silverman
Feb. 16–March 13, 2011
This stunning and newly released stage adaptation by the original screenplay author departs from cinematic realism to provide a piece of dockside expressionism. The hero remains Terry Molloy, the ex-boxer and waterfront bum who takes on the corrupt union mafia. Driven by love for the sister of one of the mob's victims, and spurred on by a militant Catholic priest, he rejects the strenuous claims both of his brother and the racketeers, and testifies to the Crime Commission.
World Premiere
LOLITA ROADTRIP
By Trevor Allen
April 6-May 1, 2011
The first recipient of Playground's New Play Production Fund
This darkly comic play follows Julia (a rebellious Stanford graduate student researching her thesis) and Danny (a hitchhiking teenaged runaway she picks up) as together they retrace novelist and lepidopterist Vladimir Nabokov's actual 1941 roadtrip from New York to Stanford. A series of cross country adventures ensues, bringing them closer to Julia's climactic confrontation with Professor Drake (the man who stole her innocence and plagiarized her journal). Nabokov's spirit visits them and, somewhere between the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas, they confront their own dark pasts and discover what really causes a chrysalis to transform into a butterfly. Lolita Roadtrip will mark Trevor Allen's second world premiere with San Jose Stage Company, following the 2005 hit Tenders in the Fog.
