Is this recording worth getting? if so then why is it.
I think I want it.
If you're talking about the Original Broadway Cast, then yes. It is a haunting, interesting, beautiful score with some great performances. I don't have it, but many say the Original London Cast Recording is better.
I love the B'way cast recording of Secret Garden. It's one of the most hauntingly beautiful scores I've ever heard (right up there with The Light in the Piazza) with wonderful performances all around--both Lily's Eyes and Hold On had me sobbing on my first listen and continue to bring tears to my eyes. I actually need to buy the C.D. myself, because I bought it so long ago that I only have it on cassette! LOL!
The Cast Recording is wonderful. However, do not be fooled, it's not the best on stage.

I bought the CD a couple weeks back and still haven't made it past track 4, it just didnt' really "stick" with me. Who knows, though, you might love it.
The Australian one is worth it. Don't bother with the Broadway one, even if there are far more tracks.
Well if I get it I'm probably going to get the Broadway Cast just because of Rebecca Lukers wonderful voice.
The Australian recording is just 8 tracks totalling 26 minutes.
The Broadway recording was done so that dialogue links many of the songs making it easy to listen to the CD and understand the story and characters.
Several pretty songs but I have to admit it is not one of my favourite cast albums. I like it, admire the musical structure. But it just never became a top favourite of mine.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Speaking of "The Secret Garden", are there any pictures of the set design for the Original Broadway Cast. I can never really find pictures of what it looked like.
Rentboy -- you haven't made it past track 4 -- just skip ahead to Lily's Eyes -- if that doesn't convince you to listen to the rest, nothing will. There are several other beautiful songs -- especially "How Could I Ever Know," "A Bit of Earth," "Winter's On the Wing," and "Quintet" -- but "Lily's Eyes" - God, it's just so beautiful. There is too much dialogue on that CD for my tastes, and some music that just isn't that great, but what is great, is REALLY great.
TSG broadway cast recording is one of few recordings that I am never tired of. I can play the recording again and again. The music is magic.
I love this soundtrack, especially "Winters on the Wing," one of my favorite all time B'way tenor moments!
There are a few pictures in the Vocal Selections book, although most of them focus on the actors, not the background. There is one that shows what I believe was the scrim that covered the stage before the show started. I can scan that one especially if anyone is interested.
While we are talking about The Secret Garden, is there any talk of who will be featured in the World AIDS Day concert?
