I was fortunate enough to be at the Lincoln Center B&N on Monday for "The Sound of Music" 50th anniversary celebration/signing. It was a pleasant, low-key affair and one that I don't think I will ever forget.

Haven't seen anyone post about it, so I thought I'd share my experience.

Best,
~Kevin

That was a wonderful and insightful read! Thank you so much for it! I wish I was there.

Sam von Trapp's story was hilarious. I think the real Von Trapps are just now realizing how important The Sound of Music is. I wish they would have realized that decades ago. I know there was a little resentment at the fact that so many things from the real life story were changed for the stage and screen, and I understand that. Personally, if my story was the subject of two successful German films, a Tony Award winning Broadway musical, and one of the most successful Hollywood films of all time, no words would describe how elated I would be.

Did you get the Pop Up book? If you did, how is it?

Sam has been very active in bringing around the family and their Lodge to embrace the fictional side of their story. It appears that the von Trapp children weren't keen on it and sheltered their own children from it as best they could. But the generation once removed is using it to their advantage; they even started advertising the Lodge during TV airings of the movie.

As for the pop-up book, it's quite interesting. Bert Fink has adapted the stage libretto into a children's story that reads well. Truth be told, I don't know much about pop-up books (I can barely remember reading them myself), but I thought it was very well done.

While researching, I found three television appearances from the time of the OBC. The first is Lauri Peters & the other von Trapp children as the "Mystery Guest" on What's My Line, the second is Patricia Neway singing "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" on the 1959 Ed Sullivan Christmas special, and the rarest of them all: Mary Martin's Tony acceptance speech on local NY television.

Best,
~K
