Posted: 2/21/09 at 3:23pmI am really disappointed. I am making my annual pilgrimage to NYC in May and really wanted to see this one. Now I just need to talk my friends into going to see Next To Normal instead...

I'm really upset by this! I was gonna go next weekend, but I guess not anymore. From the demo, the songs just seemed really beautiful I especially love "The Butterfly Effect".

Posted: 2/21/09 at 3:25pmCan't Will Chase get a break? I mean, name a show where he originated a role that wasn't a flop.

Posted: 2/21/09 at 3:25pmI truly feel sorry for Will. With High Fidelity having a short run and now The Story of My Life, I wish him the best! Hope Malcolm finds new work as well.

Malcolm had taken such a long hiatus from the Broadway stage and now he comes back and look what happens!
Mr. Gets is a brilliant performer and singer. I'm more upset about losing him than the show. Hopefully he picks up something else soon...

I feel sorry for the members of the production because all their hard work will probably end with them being declared "ineligible" for Tony Consideration. Will is one of my favorite performers and I hope after Lennon, High Fidelity, and now this, his new musical unlucky streak ends. On the bright side at least it lasted 4 more performances than Glory Days

Posted: 2/21/09 at 4:00pmI saw Glory Days. This show does not deserve the same fate. I never expected it to last long, but this makes me so sad. I just got tickets for tonight.

Posted: 2/21/09 at 4:16pmToo bad. I feel bad for Chase as well. I wonder if he will ever have a hit-the problem is that these tiny, 2-7 cast member shows rarely do well on Broadway-would possibly have been a different story if it was off-broadway. I wonder how long it will be until we get another Myspace rant from him...if only he learned after doing the intimate High Fidelity.

Damn...I was really curious about this show, too.
But really, why do producers DO this? It didn't even really get a chance.

It's not the size that matters. It's what you do with it.
I don't buy the assumption that small cast shows won't succeed on Broadway. They will if well done and if they get the support of the critics and theatre community.
Based on reviews alone, LITLE MERMAID would have closed in 5 days as well BUT it had a recognizable title that has sold and continues to sell tickets to a show that is (from all reports) sub-par.
STORY OF MY LIFE is a small show with a much lower break-even yet could only sell $78 K worth of tickets in its first week of previews. (It would need about double that to break even.)
Why were sale so sluggish? The economy, perhaps. The lack of a recognizable title, and two leads that while well known ion theatre circles are not big marquee draws.
The critics listed the show's shortcomings, but the reviews did not focus on some of the aspects the show did well. Notably a rich score, loaded with character detail. To churlishly damn the show for sounding too much like Sondheim, well is there anyone better on Broadway for new writers should emulate? Would you really rather they try and copy Frank Wildhorn??
Ultimately we get the Broadway we deserve and if the critics enjoy hammering away at an underdog show, we can look forward to a long line of stage retreads of already established movies with pre-sold audiences.
But that doesn't bode well for the state of the art.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
