When do the nationals get to see this one? its already been on the road 3 weeks.

re: The Thornbirds - the musical

It's on tour until 11 July, calling at Aberystwyth, Llandudno, Woleverhampton, Windsor, Bradford, Hull, Plymouth, Malvern, Birmingham and ending at the Wales Millennium Centre. So maybe the nationals will pick it up as it reaches some of the laregr cities. I think by the time it gets to the WMC, they'll be playing to an empty auditorium!

re: The Thornbirds - the musical

Excuse my French but what the **** is this ****!

I just tried to listen to the overture on the website and nearly did a Van Gogh and pulled my ears off out of desperation. This is actually what I imagine hell sounding like: a crappy synth Broadway overture with wailing guitar and spacey noises making me hate it even more. It only gets worse though, a terrible rock tenor comes in warbling two octaves too high and the electric guitar goes crazy.

OMG, what is this SH*T!!!!! I am beyond thankful I was in the US while this made its stop in Poole otherwise I would've gone along, heard the overture live, thrown my audience ettiquette book in the metaphorical bin and done my own version of Patti LuPone: "STOP, STOP, STOP!! STOP MAKING MY EARS HURT!! WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!! STOP INSULTING THE MUSICAL INTELLIGENCE OF THIS AUDIENCE!! WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!!"

EDIT: Since when is BWW censored?! I purposely typed two words in the first sentence I would usually never type, purely to express my outrage, yet found they had been censored. What has this world come to when an internet forum has expletives censored?!

Oz - believe me, the actual show is far worse than the clips on the website and your expletives would be flying fast and furious if you got to see it! lol
The most baffling question is - who the hell threw money at this twaddle so that it actually got to the stage?

I think the blame can be placed squarely on Colleen McCullough. She would've supplied a vast percentage of the show's financial backing via the 20 years of royalties she has gathered.

re: The Thornbirds - the musical

Yes, you're probably right. Shame she didn't spend her money on hiring a librettist and lyricist who actually know how to write a musical. She's clearly a brilliant novelist but the disciplines are very different.

I would never tell anyone not to see this or any show. Firstly, I would say it's worth seeing for the unintentional comedy factor (I laughed all the way through - for all the wrong reasons). Secondly, I would not presume that my verdict is infallible. Maybe you will love it and I am, in fact, as delusional for hating it as I believe Ms McCollough is for writing it. lol

Whoever wrote the review for the Stage must have been on crack when he saw it. lol He can't have seen many musicals - or even much theatre at all - if he thought the performances were "uniformly excellent". Apart from the two leads, I've honestly seen better acting in amateur shows. And the Australian accents, which he describes as "spot on", were very hit and miss and, in the case of some of the cast, non-existent. I get the impression the critic is pandering to the production company.

Flattered you trust my review, mama - but you ought to go just to have a good laugh.
Btw - I just remembered there was a moment in the show when a character came out with the line, "I can't stand here listening to any more of this nonsense!" I was tempted to shout out, "me neither!" lol

The Times - Negative, 2 stars

http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/stage/theatre/article6163059.ece

Well, it's some consolation that this ill-starred musical doesn't last as long as the notorious television mini-series. Given that Colleen McCullough's tale of priestly ambition and suppressed lust was such an enormous bestseller back in the Seventies, her stage adaptation ought to be able to tap into a ready-made audience, but only the most obsessive fan is likely to enjoy this muddled, oddly unengaging show.

Michael Bogdanov does a game job of trying to impose some sort of structure on McCullough's rambling script. Sean Crowley's spare but evocative sets are a definite asset too. The challenge defeats them in the end, though, especially as the music by the German composer Gloria Bruni wanders all over the place, evoking echoes of Les Misérables or Lloyd Webber anthems.

The plot is certainly not lacking in ambition. Spanning a good half-century, it turns on the obsessive relationship between Meggie Cleary, a young woman of the Outback, and a handsome Catholic priest, Father Ralph de Bricassart (a perfect bodice-ripping name if ever there was one). Meggie wants Ralph for her husband, while he struggles to choose between lust, spirituality and the mere desire to climb the greasy pole to the Vatican.

Much attention is also lavished on a superfluous sub-plot involving Meggie's wayward brother, Frank. Blockbuster novels can afford to meander; a musical does so at its peril. The storyline just about maintains momentum until the interval, but collapses as the decades hurtle by and the characters' hair takes on unconvincing streaks of grey.

Bruni's music is at its most persuasive in numbers such as No Child Any Longer, in which the lead voices blend with an operatic flourish. Attempts at a more earthy style create some jarring anachronisms - the chorus's boogie workout on Let's Party On, for instance, is toe-curlingly embarrassing. McCullough's lyrics seldom take flight, and it doesn't help that the arrangements, astutely performed by an eight-piece band, are underpowered for a venue of this size.

Helen Anker makes the most of the surprisingly unsexy role of Meggie. Despite his forceful singing and rippling physique, Matthew Goodgame (winner of Channel Four's Musicality series) struggled on opening night to bring the character of Ralph to life. The scene in which the couple's passion is finally consummated prompted more than a few embarrassed guffaws from the audience. Sadly, this is the farewell production from the Wales Theatre Company. What a disappointing way to bow out.

Metro - Mixed

http://www.metro.co.uk/metrolife/article.html?Thorn_Birds_musical_hits_a_thorny_patch&in_article_id=630624&in_page_id=224&in_a_source=

The Wales Theatre Company's world premiere of Colleen McCullough's The Thorn Birds fails to fully measure up to past successes. Condensing this epic romance into a musical was always going to be ambitious. The fast-paced music and plot don't entirely achieve the emotional intensity demanded from a story that spans more than 50 years.

The race through the tale makes the simmering forbidden romance between frustrated young woman Meggie (Helen Anker) and priest Ralph (Mathew Goodgame) at some points unconvincing, despite their spirited performances.

Their growing romance is at times overshadowed by brilliant performances from bitter grandmother Mary (Andrea Miller), world-weary mother Fee (Llinos Daniel) and the understated narrator, Cardinal (Peter Karrie). The production finds its feet when Meggie and Ralph finally give in to their love, a scene that stunned the audience to silence.

With spine-tingling songs, the drama is punctuated by some superb comic moments, including a darkly amusing performance from Meggie's fiancé Luke (Richard Munday) when he discovers the extent of his fiancée's fortune.

Sadly, The Thorn Birds will be the company's last production, and although the story's potential goes unrealised, it's worth a ticket to see a stellar cast perform stand-out songs, and one of Wales' finest theatre companies in its final act.

re: The Thornbirds - the musical

Telegraph - Mixed to Negative

My wife as good as swooned at the news that I was going to see The Thorn Birds: a musical which Wales Theatre Company are touring this Spring. Every teenage girl watched the TV mini-series in the Eighties, she assured me, murmuring the name of Richard Chamberlain with an ecstasy I found almost disquieting. Hands up, it passed me by, totally. I can't think where I could have been. Probably worrying about impending Cold War Armageddon.

There's actually something faintly apocalyptic about the hot, arid, comfortless New South Wales landscape evoked in Colleen McCullough's family saga - which started out as a best-selling novel in 1977. The struggle to survive on an outback sheep-station in the early part of the 20th-century was harsh and unrelenting - a recipe for marital misery, too.

At the outset here, we see disappointment etched on the face of Llinos Daniel's Fee, wife of impoverished farmer Paddy Cleary - always toiling, often pregnant, and determined that her only daughter, Meggie, will enjoy a better life when she hits maturity. But Meggie has eyes only for the kindly, handsome young Catholic Priest in their midst - Father Ralph de Bricassart - and as childhood gives way to beautiful womanhood, her obstinate obsession - squared against his celibate devotion to the Lord - provides the cue for much anguish, conflict, simmering romance and soapy heartbreak.

And the cue, in this version - with book and lyrics by McCullough herself, and music by Gloria Bruni - for many, many songs. Far too many: 36 in total, with apparently enough extraneous material waiting in the wings to furnish yet another musical, heaven help us. Some of the ballads are almost memorable in their syrupy excess but many other numbers, often backed by flavourless rock gyrations, are as soon forgotten as chirruped.

The chief failing lies in the lyrics. Although McCullough used to be a neurophysiologist, her rhyming schemes are surprisingly bird-brained. When Ralph rails against the manipulation of Paddy's rich, decrepit sister, who openly lusts after him, with the line 'I am Mary Carson's thing / A puppet on a string', forgive me, Father, but I couldn't help groaning.

That said, what begins by feeling interminable gradually becomes palatable and even enjoyable. That's partly down to the tightening narrative grip and the indomitable momentum of Michael Bogdanov's slick production. Mainly, though, it's thanks to the two leads. As Ralph, Matthew Goodgame's soaring singing voice, heart-throb good-looks and opportunely flashed torso hold his audience's attention and maintain its affection for a character who often acts like a pompous prig. And Helen Anker is equally appealing as Meggie, growing from girlish innocence into disillusioned resilience. When the pair clinch, in a release of pent-up yearning, it's like watching rain fall on a parched plain.

With committed performances from the rest of the 21-strong company, the show certainly deserves the attention of The Thorn Birds vast flock of fans; whether it should ever land in the West End, though, I sorely doubt.

re: The Thornbirds - the musical

Wales Online - Negative

IT WAS the cult ?80s TV mini series that had millions of us hooked.

Now, 26 years on, the stage musical version of The Thorn Birds has received its world premiere in Wales ? but sadly it?s not a patch on the feature, which starred Richard Chamberlain as the Roman Catholic priest who embarks on an illicit affair with a young woman.

The acting and singing isn?t really the problem here ? despite a few nerves, the performances were adequate ? but the production, which is the swansong for Michael Bogdanov?s Wales Theatre Company, just doesn?t gel as a whole.

The action starts during a family show in the Australian Outback, where the Cleary family have relocated. Former Phantom of the Opera star Peter Karrie, who plays the Cardinal, acts as the narrator, introducing us to the family ? from put-upon mother Fee, wonderfully played by Llinos Daniel, to the wealthy and domineering aunt, Mary Carson, another fine performance from Andrea Miller.

A big cinema screen is used as the backdrop, and location shots are beamed from it during each scene, which means only a few simple but effective props are needed.

Helen Anker brings a blend of naivety and passion to the role of Meggie while Matthew Goodgame is well cast as Ralph.

But there are two main faults with the production ? it is too long and over-indulgent and, for me, it just doesn?t work as a musical.

Yes, The Thorn Birds is an epic saga ? Colleen McCullough?s 1977 novel on which it is based spans 54 years ? but there are at least three scenes which are surplus to requirement.

When it comes to the music, it just didn?t grab me. For a musical to be a success the songs need to flow seamlessly but composer Gloria Bruni doesn?t seem to know what style of musical The Thorn Birds should be.

There are also too many weak numbers and I just can?t imagine it ever being a soundtrack that you would want to rush out and buy.

With some well established characters and a great story line, The Thorn Birds deserves to be staged but I think it would work far better as a straight play than a musical as the drama could then really speak for itself.
