Since most of us on this board consider ourselves pretty knowledgeable about broadway and it's stars, I'm assuming that the normal (AKA nonobsessive) people in our lives just aren't quite up to speed. Example: Tonight, as my friend and I headed over to the mall, she wanted to get a CD. When I was waiting for her to pay, I stopped at the "Showtunes" section, listening to some clips of songs from cast recordings I wanted to get. All of a sudden my friend RUNS over saying as loud as possible "OMG GET THE BROOKLYN SOUNDTRACK!" (she only knows about it since we are going in October).

So to the normal person, this isn't such a bad statement, but I couldn't stop laughing as I was trying to explain that there is no way that a Brooklyn cast recording would be out this early.

Does anyone else have any funny stories from friends/family trying to be in the in-crowd, cultish society of broadway, but failing miserably? The Unsaavy Broadway People In Our Lives...

Can you change this to unsavory Broadway people? I'd like to read about them.

I was walking with a friend in my English class in Times Square. I was excited to see Susan Egan, and had her take a picture of me and Susan. I was so happy. Anyways, after, she says, "Who's that?" with a confused look on her face.

I can't talk about shows with my family. They just give me blank stares or try to change the conversation because they are really bored. I can hardly drag my mother into the city to see a show (even when one of our really good friends is in it!!!)

I have a few friends who are into theatre but they don't see shows as much as I do and also sometimes give me the "your'e crazy!" look when I start to talk about theatre and broadway.

Hahaha I know how this feels. My grandmother always gets all the stars from all the shows messed up and I just dont have the heart to tell her she's wrong because she's always so proud that she knows lol. Its cute. Also Ive made the mistake of talking to some big athletes in my school about Wonderful Town...if you're happy getting weird looks go for it lol!

The worst for me is my friends who like theater but just the most mainstream things they can get their hands on, such as my friend who calls herself a "broadway freak" and then basically only listens to Wicked and songs like "On My Own". I just want to go crazy sometimes. I can deal with the people who know nothing about it, but it's the ones who think they know everything about theater that really drive me up the wall! But I guess that just makes me a snob re: The Unsaavy Broadway People In Our Lives...

"but it's the ones who think they know everything about theater that really drive me up the wall!"

YES! I have friends like that too. And they drive me insane. One of them proclaimed to know more about musical theatre then me. And then I found out she didn't know who GENE KELLY or GINGER ROGERS were.

I don't know what I would do without the internet regarding Broadway. I've educated people on who Kristin Chenoweth is, and some people even know who Bernadette Peters is. But unfortunately, Los Angeles isn't known for it's theater obsessed people like me!

What sucks is my father doesn't appreciate the fact that he saw Gypsy with Ethel Merman. I'm like "you saw what with who?!" and he responds "Oh yeah, the one with the stripper".

I almost died.

lol.. this is a good thread since some of my friends arent up to what's going on in theatre. some of them do appreciate it but alot of them are really surprised that im into it the way that i am....but then again most of the people i hang with are into mary j. blige, snoop dog, nelly...more the hip/hop r&b crowd...which is cool because i love that music, but i dont consider myself narrow minded and ive given broadway music a chance. i guess u can say ever since i saw west side story i was hooked and little by little i started "self-educating" myself.

i can talk to some of my friends about it and theyre cool with it but some of them just dont get it, which is all good because i really dont care, its what i like and i consider myself a pretty well rounded person. i love all types of music, movies, etc....

i used to hide my cast recordings cuz i didnt want to get teased but now i dont care....i took my best friend derek to see phantom of the opera and he wound up liking it......

but i have alot of unsaavy broadway people in my life....

LOL I have another story I just thought of about the same friend...

We were actually talking about Idina Menzel (she knows of her because of me playing Wicked so much), and I was saying how when we see the show, I hope that at the stage door she's nice, blah blah. She is driving but stops and gives me this big stare and is like "Why wouldn't she be? She's famous", so I had to explain how Idina is shy, etc. etc. So my friend goes "Yeah but like Jennifer Aniston isn't shy, she meets people all the time"

I just found it funny comparing Idina to Jennifer Aniston - theres nothing to compare!

Your friend called it a "soundtrack?" She should be punched in the face.

Sometimes she should be punched in the face, but take pity on her unpriveledged life where she thinks it is called a soundtrack!

My entire family thinks I'm nuts. Whenever my grandparents come to see me in a show they say, "Well Jill that was very good--but couldn't you play a sport or something else like other kids?"

My family isn't into the arts...

I've gotten my friends hooked on mainstream, really popular Broadway like Hairspray and Wicked. It's the best I could do, but hey, its better than nothing.

I did a project in Social Studies on Bernadette Peters. It was like, pick a person or band and relate them to the society they lived in. So I pick Bernadette and talk about how she she started Broadway barks and everything with the Gay and Lesbian community. Well, my principal loves Broadway and saw my Bernadette collage and knew right away it was mine.

Anyway, when I did my presentation in front of the class everyone was just staring at me. I was like well Bernadette is on Broadway and she has two Tony's. First question:"What's a Tony?" I almost died. Then I played a clip from AGYG. I wanted to show people how amazing she was so I played the part when she says something like "Any note you can hold I can hold longer" and when she holds it. Someone asked me if my CD was skipping lol. I was just amazed they didn't know who she was.

What is Broadway? A street? Some say it's a street. Some say it is the best street in the world. Others think its terrible. That's the beauty of it, it's terribly beautiful. Some hate it and don't know why. Others love it and don't know why. That's what makes it so wonderful, it's a mystery.

i tend to sing whenever something reminds me of a line from a song changing the words a little to make it fit or sing what comes after those words if they're exact

wow that made little sense - hope you followed!!

my parents are getting better about it but my friends give me blank stares most of the time!! lol

My teacher was trying to discuss a possible trip to NYC to see a show (which happened - we saw POTO). This was back in May of this year. She was asking us if we were interested, because if we weren't, she wouldn't bother doing research. A person in my class blurted out, "Why can't we just go see Cats?" A few minutes later, my teacher included Cats in a list of possible shows we could see. Keep in mind that this happened this year and Cats closed four years ago. Lol.

My parents are casual theater fans- they'll go to see the ocassional play, and rarely a musical. They don't claim any kind of expertise, so that's fine.

But my dad watched the Tonys with me this year, and the look on his face when I screamed for the Avenue Q win was priceless. "What? What? Why are you so happy?"

Ah, good times. :)

My brother told me he wouldn't be able to pick Liza Minnelli out of a room full of people. I've also attempted to take him to see a Broadway show and when I asked him what he wants to see he'll say "Seussical". He can't get it through his head that closed a few years ago.

My father, to this day, believes Hugh Jackman was in "Tommy", "Titanic", and "Assassins". I'm not sure how someone can confuse Michael Cerveris with Hugh Jackman but so be it. As a matter of fact, anytime I talk about a musical, he thinks Hugh Jackman was in it.

My friend believed that during "Urinetown", the audience would see the actors actually peeing. Don't ask me why because that's what I've been trying to figure out.

chinkie azn jai, my father is the same exact way, although he saw "Rent" with me. Actually my father doesn't know of some of these smaller shows. When I bought the "Caroline, or Change" recording he asked me when it was opening, same with "The Last Five Years".
