Almost all the people in my life don't know anything about Broadway (except my parents, who have always been Broadway fans and my brother, who has to put up with me always talking about Broadway).

So, my friends and I went to go see 13 Going on 30 and School of Rock. So at SoR, I heard the voice of Adam Pascal, and I screamed "OMG, IT'S ADAM!!!!" And my friends just looked at me and are like "Who???" And the same thing happened at 13 when Susan Egan was on. And then of course when we were having a Disney movie marathon, and I was pointing out all the Broadway people who did the singing voices, and my friends are like "Get a life." And then I was so happy the day after the Tonys, and my friends refused to talk to me until I calmed down.

Then, yesterday, my friend (who I guess was trying to pretend she actually likes Broadway), goes "I really want to see that new show, The Wicked Witch before it closes. Doesn't some fat guy play the witch?"..... I nearly died.

I may know a lot about Broadway, but I'm completely "unsavvy" about sports and other things that don't interest me. I would certainly hope my friends/relatives don't get as worked up about my disinterest in those things as you all are. Everyone has their own interests.

LOL BroadwayDiva! Your post made me crack up.
But I think Rathnait is right... everyone has something they love. I'm lucky that even my friends who aren't "into" Broadway are very open to it. They love to come see stuff with me because I'm so passionate about it, and they usually end up getting sucked in. They do, of course, have a nice time poking innocent fun at my obsessive ways, but they're great.

I have a few friends who are interested but not so dedicated to knowing more about shows as I am. I am the Broadway junkie of the group. I'm always the one picking out their audition songs for them when they need one. No one has the appreciation for musical theatre that I have and it makes me really mad when I get excited about something like Spamalot or getting a new cast recording. Their response is generally along the lines of "cool" or "oh" or "what's that again?". It makes me feel relieved that I can come here to my fellow junkies and talk about theatre with people who understand what I'm talking about.

R62, you're right. But even this will make you queasy.

Me: What movie do you wanna watch tonight?
Friend 1: I dunno. You choose.
Me: We can watch 'Singing in the Rain'
Friend 2: Isn't that a musical?
Friend 1: Oh yeah, with that guy, what's his name?
Friend 2: Gene Hackman!
Friend 1: Yes! I love that guy. I didn't know he could sing.

That was when I cried inside.

R62 has a good point. My friends make fun of me because I don't know all the new songs on the radio, and I know absolutely nothing about sports. But since they can make fun of me for that, I can say "Wow- you don't know who Bernadette Peters is? That's sad".

But Broadway-liking is unheard of at my school, so I always get a lot of crap for liking Broadway. So, I give it right back to people I don't like by quoting some Broadway show.

Oh Rath...why must you go and inject a balanced perspective into this thread??? It's NO FUN!

And one more thing...there are more than a few people HERE who think they know a lot about theatre...but don't.

Yeah, there's this one person on this board and they thought they were telling everyone about the release of LT2 and infact EVERYONE knew about it already. So now this person has retreated to a hole somewhere in embarresment.

I know exactly what you are talking about. One of my closest friends thinks she's an expert on theater, but has never seen a straight play! Just the commercial ones, like Wicked, 42nd Street, etc. She has no idea about I Am My Own Wife. If it's not a huge musical she is not interested. Though I finally got her to an off-broadway musical, The Thing About Men and Menopause The Musical!

BTW...the grammar comment was directed at myself. I'm unclear of how to phrase the sentece that came immediately before.

My best or worst experience was when I was working the box office at a repertory theater. The show that was playing at the time was "The Sound Of Music". I answered the phone at the box office and a woman asked me if the play was a musical and what was it about? That was it! I hung up!
