Posted: 3/20/07 at 9:13ami have seen the show, but when the vase breaks do they get a new one for every show or is it just like a magnet where it can break and then it can be put together again?

Wow, Yankeefan007. I guess your remark put any and all stops to that inquiry, huh?

It's a question of common sense.
Do YOU really think they would break a vase on stage (with the danger of broken glass) and replace it every show?

"ok i work there 3 days a week at the box office not the freacking stage door!"
Well, what makes you think we work at the "freacking" stage door?

re: valentine inside the dollhouse...
i've always been curious about the tricks they use in mary poppins. i've spoken to two people who work at the theatre and watched dress rehearsals before the show opened. from what they've told me, and keep in mind they don't know details just what they've seen from watching rehearsals, the dollhouse is a trick table using mirrors. if you notice, the dollhouse table changes between 'normal' nursery scenes and the 'temper temper' scene (round table - square table, and vice versa). apparently there is enough room for tyler to climb from behind the set into the space below the table, and then he comes out through the dollhouse doors.
it's definitely saying something about the creative team and special effects team is people are still wondering, after seeing the show multiple times, how tricks are accomplished. personally, i think mary poppins is one of the most visually impressive shows on broadway right now

Posted: 3/20/07 at 1:47pmThe illusions in Mary Poppins were designed by Jim Steinmeyer, who is a legend in the world of stage magic (working for people like Doug Henning, David Coppperfield, and Lance Burton, among many others). I haven't seen the show, so I can't comment specifically- but I can say that Steinmeyer's work is usually VERY difficult to figure out.

Posted: 3/20/07 at 1:55pmJim Steinmeyer's work which is usually incredible is lacking in this show. I know about suspension of disbelief in theatre, and the effects are fine if you're good with that former concept, however, I figured everything out the first time I saw it. His other stuff is usually much more convincing.

I think that lots of shows have broken things and replaced them every night.
There was an incident (I think it was at The Goat or Sylvia) where an audience member did get hit by flying pottery...stitches and all!)
