Hey all,
The Wedding Singer is on VH1 right now (7:00pm ET Sat. Nov.4)
Love this movie... can't say the same for the show, but it serves as a reminder for what I would have liked the show to reflect more.

Beat me to it.
But, I love both the movie and the show. I celebrate their similarities and differences.
They're both equally delightful.
Eh, Stephen Lynch is great considering his comedic background, but the delivery of the part in the movie is on par.
Drew's Julia is quite possibly one of the most lovable characters along with Christine Taylor. Like I said, the Broadway versions' did a good job, but nothing living up to their performances I feel (although I like many of them in their other works)
I wish they had the cipyrights to use actual 80's music in the show, that would have made me warm up to it a little more.
Heart, thats what the musical was lacking.
Wow.
I feel an abundance of heart everytime I see the show.
But...everyone has their own opinion.
And the world continues to turn.
I don't feel like cheesey love ballads and upbeat music = heart, but who knows, maybe you just felt something I didn't.
Another thing about Film vs Show is the lack of setup about how bad Robbie wanted to get married. "He's wanted to get married since Mom and Dad died." Just another thing I noticed as I watched.

um, I DEF feel the show is like.. FAR superior
sorry, I like adam sandler, but I LOVE LOVE stephen lynch a ton more, and always have! even before the show ever came along, I just always loved him more as a comedian than adam. And um, Stephen really does do adam sandler better than adam sandler!
and um, WHAY is the wedding singer without Felicia Finley and her amazing sluttiness!?
And and um... no Amy Spanger? just... no.
And I lurve Drew Barrymore, but I lurve Laura just about as much :P
*for the record, the movie's adorable and I love it! definitely not saying I dont like it! I just... love the show way more hehe
my favorite part of the movie is putting in where the musical numbers should go.

I didn't even notice that they cut the part about his mom and dad dying. In my book, that's too much emotional baggage for a musical like The Wedding Singer. That's my opinion.

same here! i also love reciting the exact dialogue from the show with the movie...haha
but the movie and the show are very different with very different actors/actresses, so its hard to say which one is better :)

I really really miss the songs in the movie. Granted, I saw the show and then watched the movie, but I really feel like the songs enhanced it so much. Plus, I'm not an Adam Sandler fan by any means. And Amy Spanger just made the show for me (even though Christine Taylor was GREAT). But I feel like the songs just make it so much better.

^exactly!
I was like "no amazing music, and no AMY and FELICIA!!"
it really makes you appreciate just how much they add to the show though
hehe
*is listening to Someday right now... and appreciating the music that much more*

That was, UM, literally painful to read.
I'm aware that people enjoy TWS because its "good simple fun" and all that jazz, but when it comes to comparing it to the film its far inferior.
The movie has characters with many more layers and although seemingly can be construed as exact characters from the 80s, at least they're not caricatures of the 80s. Broadway is certainly home to layered characters, even in comedies, so this isn't exempt.
As I said, I enjoyed the individual performances of the actors but regardless of how hard they were trying the book and music were unsalvagable.

Why start a thread asking for opinions if you are just going to state your own like it's a fact?
Everyone has their own opinion. So what if the show doesn't have layers of backstory? That doesn't make it any less effective.
I, for one, loved the movie for years before seeing the show, but found it to be less fun after seeing the show. But I still enjoy both.

^first off, I apologize because I didn't realize how many times I said "um" in my other post, and thats pretty bad
If I'd noticed earlier how annoying the whole post sounded I would have gone back and edited right away! I have some very bad internet writing habits that I usually try to make sure and keep under control, but sometimes I slip up and they come out anyway lol
Secondly, you're perfectly entitled to your opinion, and you make very valid points :) I guess, thinking about it, the movie characters do seem a bit more developed. I just find the movie more boring than the show. Sure, the movie may be more realistic, but does that really make it any more entertaining? Logically, though, it probably comes from the fact that I love the music and the writing of the show- a lot. So, I can absoltuely see why you wouldn't like it if you didn't like the music or writing, I just happen to disagree!
Thirdly, though you make a perfectly good argument, don't you think you ARE being a little bit harsh? Its fine to feel that way, but please try and keep in mind that that is your opinion, not fact!

Oh, I'm sorry. I guess I have to put IMO, oh wait I'm sorry, IMHO in front of everything I say for you to know that its only my opinion. LAME POINT, and that's a fact. Unless in fact you're saying that I'm so convincing that it sounds like I'm stating fact.
Yes, the movie is less "fun" than the show, but i think thats due to the "fluff-factor" of the show.

Thank you for noticing your faux pas, thats very mature of you if I do say so myself.
It may seem as though I'm being harsh, but that may be because this is coming up in a more sensitive time for TWS fans (which are a more broadway-board-active bunch) and I would say generally younger Broadway fans, almost comprised as the the puberty of the Wicked generation.
I understand saying that the movie seems more boring, comparatively speaking, but I do feel that by using the exact dialogue from the movie (much slower) in the show (fast-paced fluff) is a little unfair to the material and doesn't match up.
They are definetly separate entities, by all means, but I just feel that in telling this story the film is more entertaining, enthralling and funny (via delivery).

Wow, I didn't mean for it to get catty. No need to be defensive. I'm not a slave to acronyms, but thanks anyway.
And though I am a Wedding Singer fan, I am not a Wicked fan. The fact that I'm younger doesn't mean that I'm completely musically shallow (sorry to whomever that offends). Just throwing that out there. (...if you don't like it, you can throw it right back. Sorry, had to throw in the Ron Burgundy quote. Everyone needs idiotic humor sometimes.
)
I hope that wasn't an unfair generalization, but I'm sure someone else will correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm not saying that to make myself look better, I can't say that I didn't fall victim to it as well. I had limited actual Broadway historical knowledge when I saw Wicked and was smitten as well and I'm sure that if in the same perdicament I had seen TWS I would have felt the same way.
It just seems like a natural progression to go from a Wicked obsession to one of the TWS judging by the fan-girlish following of both show.

didn't even notice that they cut the part about his mom and dad dying.
actually they dont exclude it from the show. rosie mentions that his parents, god rest their souls will be looking down on him on his wedding day.
haha, sry, just had to mention. i wont write my feelings on here though bc apparently people arent entitled to opinions without people yelling at them, so im gonna shut up. but most of you know how i feel. :)
This is true.
I brought up the parents' death ad something that illustrates how important getting married was so to Robbie. Due to the fast-pacing of the script, Robbie just waxes and wains through so many emotions at such a pace that his innate need to be married and the dissapointment thereafter are almost forgetable.
I don't get why people are saying they won't post opinions. The only reason for my quick responses is because it became more of a "chatroom" as we posted as we watched the movie than an actual thread.

haha, wait! are my fan photos still there?? omg, im soo confused, lol. i had like everything deleted, but my photos are still there? YAY!! lol.
oo, yea, i guess they didnt wanna go into as much detail about his parents in the show.
im just not in the mood tonight to get my opinions criticized, thats all, haha. normally i do post them. and yea, it is obviousl how i feel about the show. but you may not know how i feel about the movie. thats what im not posting, haha.

Wow, I missed a lot this weekend. I hate to bring this thread up from the bottom of page 2, but there's one plot point that I thought the movie really did better, but no one else ever seems to notice it.
In my opinion, I think the movie did a much better job of making Glen an as*hole. The cheating factor is a lot clearer earlier and in the musical a lot of the good dialogue at the club that proves how horrible he is was cut. I don't know, I know the show can't be really long but I wish they would have spent a little bit more time on this so the audience would want even more for Julia and Robbie to get together. I don't even think it would have taken that much, really.
i will agree with that. the movie does show glen being an asshole better in the movie. but i am happy with how blake plays the role so that you still dont like him. but yes, that part was better in the movie. way to notice it!! :)
