I think Margo was referring to the 1976 tony awards which included Chorus Line and chicago.
The best year of Broadway ever? It certainly isn't this year. For me, there were a lot of duds and a lot of ok shows, but nothing was amazing and nothing wowed me. There were certainly performances that wowed me, but not one show this season had that wonderful effect on me, where I couldn't stop thinking about it for days. This was a season, for me, of "oh yeah, I saw a show last night ... I almost forgot." I haven't even bought the CDs to any of the musicals this season ... I know I would never listen to them.
"It may have been mediocre, I agree, but worse than High Fidelity? For shame!"
BroadwayChica - did you see HIGH FIDELITY? Or are you assuming this because of the bad buzz/closed quickly?
I saw it closing night. It was a very solid show. I saw no reason for the show to BE a show. But it was solid, with entertaining characters, OK music, a GREAT set, and the story had me engaged. I didn't care much, but I did want to know what would happen next.
THE APPLE TREE, on the other hand, was not engaging. DIDN'T care about the characters. Didn't care about the story. A waste of great talent, IMO.
(PS: I have a tendency to preach my opinions as fact. I'm aware. Those are my feelings. I know others may have differing opinions. Share'm or agree with mine. It's great to have a venue such as BWW to discuss shows with others. *steps off the soap box*)
(PPS: That came from nowhere, didn't it?)

I was referring to the 1975-76 season which included all of the shows that I mentioned. Trust me, I know when those shows opened -- I was there.
I like your last line, Clarinet. I felt that way the first time I saw it. (Maybe it was because my seat was partial view and sold to me as full view.) But, I went back and all of a sudden, couldn't stop going back. Ten times now, eleven Fri.!
Just can't get enough of it. It's that kind of show that leaves you wanting more and asking questions, among other things. It's unsettling, which can be good. Not everything should be saccharine and 'perfect ending' these days, in my opinion.
(And, Ms. E.'s performance doesn't hurt it at all.)
EricMontreal, re. Harold Rome musicals, try FANNY(1954). It has a wonderful score--try to find the CD.The title song alone is worth the price of the CD. FANNY ran for 888 performances and starred Ezio Pinza, Florence Henderson, Walter Slezak and William Tabbert, the wonderful tenor who sang "Younger Than Springtime" and "You Have to be Taught" in the OBC of SOUTH PACIFIC and sings "Fanny" here.
As to the best season for Broadway Musicals, I agree with Margo for the 1959-1960 season. And GYPSY getting tons of Tony nominations but only Jerome Robbins winning for best direction of a musical!! Ethel Merman's public response to Mary Martin's win for THE SOUND OF MUSIC: "How can you buck a nun?"
I agree. If I wasn't leaving town in 2 weeks *I've been here doing an internship and its time to graduate* I would see it again. It seems to be a show based on detail and subtleties
Do you feel that the show would have been more effective as a play? I feel that the songs might have actually weakened the effect. Whats your opinion, having seen it multiple times
