>i< I thought Shrek was a good show and deserved a longer run, it also got reasonable reviews. this must put a West End transfer in doubt now? Is this the start of another Broadway New Year massacre, like what happened last year? >/i<
Shrek the Musical will play its final performance at the Broadway Theatre on Jan. 3, 2010, following 441 performances and 37 previews.
The national tour of the family-friendly musical based on the DreamWorks film and kid-lit favorite will launch at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre for a limited engagement, July 13Sept. 5, 2010.
Bill Damaschke, president of DreamWorks Theatricals, said on Oct. 21, "Bringing Shrek the Musical to Broadway has been a joyous and thrilling adventure, and we couldn't be more proud of our first Broadway show. We now look forward to taking the production to audiences on tour in the U.S. and beyond."
It wouldn't have made any cash but that is a run that will feature in future lists. I'm pretty sure I haven't seen it above 60% in the last few months. I'm in NY in 3 weeks time and I actually think I liked it enough to see it again- ain't much else to see! I do have list.
Shrek still has plans to come the West End end of 2010 and hope with the film "Shrek 4" out over the summer - an Autumn 2010 opening will get the production a good advance.
The show has started putting together the UK Creative team, its by no means a cert, but I wouldn't write this off just yet...
It seemed unfinished to me when I saw it in previews. I believe they have done a lot of work to it during its run. I enjoyed it more than I expected/wanted to.
Shame about Shrek but it's a decent run and will live on with the US tour and potential international productions but I hope Dreamworks aren't planning musicals based on Madagascar or Kung Fu Panda because I like them as films but I can't see them working as stage shows unless we are looking at a Lion King style reinvention.
i am still in shock, that shrek did not last as long as that hopeless washed up piece of lumpwood 'Little mermaid', really there should be more justice in musical theatre?
I saw Mermaid and Shrek on the same trip, I had a MUCH better evening at Mermaid than Shrek. Yes Mermaid had plenty of problems (direction and set being the main ones) but I left having been entertained by a very strong company of actors and a great score (old and new).
Shrek just bored me, instantly forgettable music that added nothing, a story stretched so thin nothing happens for long amounts of time, and Sutton Foster who must be one of the most annoying people to grace the stage! Its sets and costumes were great though.
I thought 'Shrek' was too long by about 20-30 minutes (the kids were getting restless, even at a matinee) and the dragon (even after many different versions) was so clunky - like something from a theme park or parade - they should have just dropped it all together. Some good songs (mainly the pastiche numbers) but the standard over all was not great.
I just saw the UK touring production of 'Beauty and the Beast'. It was so well done, it had everything that 'Shrek' was missing.
I only "saw" Shrek, or should I say I only "saw" the first act as getting through it was such a chore that I couldn't be bothered with the second. I love Tesori's work on Caroline or Change, but the songs were so bland and even John Tartaglia, who I normally find adorable, was so misdirected that he couldn't salvage his moments.
If they wait a year they may get Drury Lane, Oliver has been at TKTS and had the odd offer ever since Rowen left, and as its such a costly show to run. It wouldnt surprise me if it only sustains a two year run
They only slated it for 2 years max at the Lane. It's made its money back left right and centre and Cameron won't let it run for the sake it may make a few bob (nothing huge now)
There is a big chance Shrek could get this. I wonder now they've posted notices on Broadway earlier than they would have liked to whether it has deflated them. It shouldn't. The production opening in the West End Autumn 2010 could make them a fortune if done right.
Well it's booking till February 2011 but booking periods mean nothing and I'm sure the show made it money back already and is probably making a profit, as for Shrek, Dreamworks are very competitive and I'm sure that they will want to get an international opening around the time of Shrek Forever After. Good theatre choice if true.
When Oliver! closes next September, it would have done a near two year run at the Lane which for a theatre of that size is a pretty good run and very profitable to both Cameron Mackintosh and RUG.
