Hi folks. Had a dumb question but hoping you can answer. In the song The ladys improving theres a line which says youre bound to discover this books not her cover... Having seen the show and listened to the song, I know this means shes more than just what you see.
I heard reports Beth Leavel was emotional singing this line in the final show. Theres video around to prove it. Just wondering if someone smarter than I am (or someone who was there that night, or both!!) can explain why she might have got emotional over this particular line? Like Beth is showing shes more than just what you see based on the show shes in? Thanks in advance!!

In answering this question, I assume you know the basic premise of the plot.
Basically, this song was actually, in universe, a song pulled from one of the musicals that Dee Dee had done on stage. She's singing it to Principal Hawkins, whom she shared a connection with in Act 1, who is now disgusted with her egotistical and self serving ways.
In Act 2, she learns to listen to and respect people around her, and this song plays when she is trying to apologize to Hawkins for her behavior. With this line, she truly wants to be a better person and knows that she's more than this vain, selfish diva.

Given it was the last show, it could have nothing to do with the line during which it happened, but just when she let herself realize that it was the last time she would be singing this song, in this show, on that stage?
Now, if she got emotional during that line for the last 10 months, then that would be more of a cause for inquiry.
