I know this question has probly been asked before but is the Music at the tonys prerecorded
or is the orchestra located in a room off stage? I know that they used to be located
in the pit but why aren't they anymore? i'm just curious

Pre-recorded. At least it was two years ago.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

No, not true. The orchestra is still live - they're just located off-stage. Certain portions may be pre-recorded for logistics, but I know there's still a live orchestra for the show.

For this year, the orchestra was not in the pit in front, but off to the side of the stage.

This made it difficult for some of the performers to hear properly, and may have resulted in a few "less than perfect" performances.

Of course, Patti took care of that during rehearsals by calling them out on it!

I assume the reason for moving it off to the side is to make more room down front?

IN THE HEIGHTS and SUNDAY sounded pre-recorded, because of logistic reasons.
The orchestrations for GREASE, CRY-BABY, XANADU, and most likely CATERED AFFAIR were all expanded from the original sizes for the live Radio City Music Hall Orchestra.

GREASE: Trumpets and trombones were added to "Grease Is The Word".
CRY-BABY: I distinctly heard more strings, more trumpets, and more reeds in "A Little Upset".
XANADU: A wall-to-wall orchestral sound was added to the already-synthetic feel of "Don't Walk Away".

The orchestra being off to the side may well explain why Faith Prince had trouble with her pitch in her song from A CATERED AFFAIR. Unfortunately, the song came across very negatively. And that show needed a good performance to offset its not being nominated for best score or best musical. Too bad. Faith Prince is usually a charmer.
