I've said many times that popular doesn't equal good, and vice versa, but that doesn't mean that the two can't coincide. Despite what other posters have accused me of, I don't hate shows for being popular. Of course Broadway is a business; it always has been. But when it looks like the driving impulse behind the creation and conception of a show is nothing but business, I get mad. Because some art needs to be there, or else Broadway will lose its soul and become just another cruise ship show. And that would be heartbreaking.
