Is it just me, or has anyone else realized that this seems to be the year of the musicals in the movies? Rent, The Producers, Hairspray, Dreamgirls are some examples. As last year was the year of the biopics (The Aviator, Ray, Kinsey, De-Lovely) and they all seemed to be nominated for Oscars. Any hope for a musical to be nominated for the 2006 Oscars? If you think so, which ones?
I hope Rent is nominated, if only to cross my fingers and hope Anthony Rapp gets that won-the-award kiss he wants.
I think the Producers has a good chance of a lot of nominations. It'll translate pretty well to film, plus they have Nathan and Matthew. Since Chicago did so well, there's been an increased interest in movie musicals. I don't know if I think that's a good thing or a bad thing, to be honest.
Personally, I think the only movie that would be nominated, including actors and actresses, would be Dreamgirls. Possibly Rent. But definately not Hairspray and the Producers.
Now now, they haven't even MADE them yet!
(CARMEN JONES was on TV again last night, Justice. Dorothy is just beyond spectacular in it!)
Yes, considering that the character is so unlike her, and yet, so believeable, especially the Lip-Synching - You really believe that is her singing, but it's actually Marilyn Horne (who Dorothy befriended on the set, and watched her record the songs so that she could get the lip synching down pact - What an amazing actress!)
I definitley hope Rent gets some. Wouldn't it be stunning if someone got a best actor or actress nod!

Wouldn't it be stunning... No. I'm actually hoping the RENT movie flops. The only people that are going to see it are broadway fanatics. Regular people don't know RENT. They saw Chicago because of the four main actors.
I was thinking that last night. I guess two things could happen: Rent could get very little attention because people don't know it and it doesn't have the star power Chicago did to get it attention, or, the subject matter and idea behind it alone could be enough to get it attention and a following, much like it did when the stage production originally opened, regardless of star power or not.
Captain Obvious -
Keep in mind that when Rent came out, it was huge to non-Broadway fanatics. The ads on the NYC subways would read "Don't you hate the word Musical?" Robert DeNiro saw it and loved it so much, he wanted to produce the film. The night i went, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett, and Julia Luoise Drefuss was there. This musical opened up Broadway to people who never had gone. It was new and different. Everyone I know, who is not in the theatre world has heard of Rent.
Besides, you think people are going to pass up a movie with Rosario Dawson and Taye Diggs?
I suspect a lot of people outside of the States who didn't see the show will go see the movie.
I have no doubt that this movie will surpass POTO movie sales.

OK... firstly talking about rent, the movie will do great. Why? Because people may not know what it's about, but trust me they've heard the name as much as they've heard about Cats or Phantom. Also, people like to at least pretend or come off as sophisticated... if a $8 ticket to the theatre to say they saw a big-name musical will help them in that, they'll see it.
Secondly, it may possibly recieve nods but most likely will not win anything. This movie is being adapted and directed by Chris Columbus- and after hearing about some of his cuts (Cutting a lot of Mark out of the show and making it a romantic comedy between Roger and Mimi), I'm pretty sure he'll screw it up.
Trust me, all of these musicals coming out this year could signal the hibernation of musicals in Hollywood for a long time to come. It happened about 20 years ago (not by a lot of musicals but my several really bad ones) and we lost the musical until moulin rouge and chicago reawakened the hype. Just some food for thought. Sorry for the rant. Cheers.
Hairspray is gonna be a movie! Oh I can't wait!
I think the Producers has a great chance...
.........hopefully Hollywood will spark an interest in seeing the the "live" versions. Being a huge fan of musical theatre, "this is my thinking" ("quote" from Auntie Lindo from "Joy Luck Club" the movie........lol.............Hey, "Joy Luck Club"...........not a bad idea for a musical.
