hmmm. I wonder if it was completely demolished (the theatre where the mcdonalds is at). If you walk into that mc donalds on 42nd street and look at the set up and its space, it oddly looks like it use to be a theatre. Just me. I have a feeling that some of the theatre still exists.
Yes, Magruder, Now I remember that theatre near La Scala. It was the "George Abbott" then, and I used to ask my parents why we never saw anything there. Now I understand why! Thanks, again.
Yes, the George Abbott was its last name before it was torn down in 1970, following the 1 performance of Gantry.
As for the Candler/Harris, what was the auditorium of the theatre is now occupied by Madame Tussaud's. The theatre was on the right hand side of the Candler Building which still stands. The McDonalds uses space that was always for retail stores, not the theatre.

These photos....and memories....are fabulous! More please!
This is a great thread. I remember in Theatre History class talking about some of these places. I do love the old classic look of the marquees. Some theatres still try to do this. Kudos to them
OK, then, how about the Hippodrome, which stood on the entire block of Sixth Avenue, between 43rd and 44th Streets? It was torn down in 1939. Home of the Rodgers and Hart extravaganza Jumbo, in addition to...
"A Yankee Circus on Mars" ... which I wouldn't mind seeing.
Wow. The Hippodrome is MASSIVE! Keep these wonderful pictures coming!
They used to stage entire battles as the stage was immense. It became to costly to operate after vaudeville died. The had actual swimming pools on stage long before " O " in Las Vegas. Read about it & you will not believe what they did there. Back in those days, you really got your moneys worth
Just found this shot of the Winter Garden, when the billboard above the theatre still ran the length of the entire building.
Don't that take the rag offen the bush?

Not a Broadway theattre, but I think this theatre, the Civic Theatre in Akron, is so gorgeous. It was renovated in the past 10 years. I have performed and worked on a couple shows here. Beautiful. What do you think?
For the new Loew's Theatre of Akron, Marcus Loew chose John Eberson who became renowed in 1923, when he designed the Holblitzelle's Majestic Theatre in Houston Texas, the world's first "atmopheric theatre." The word "Atmospheric" refers to Eberson's new concept in design and decor of making the interior of a theatre like an elegant garden.
here's shea's in buffalo... it's a big, beautiful theater!
Why, if it isn't Ethel Barrymore!
the orpheum theatre in san francisco which was once called the PANTAGES THEATRE

Oh, and here, at last, are photos of the Ziegfeld Theatre. The REAL one, that was demolished in 1966, not that phony baloney movie theatre of the same name.
The Ziegfeld's auditorium.
The Ziegfeld's chandelier.
Staircase at the Ziegfeld.
For those that are wondering about the interior, it was an Art Deco riot of murals, designed by artist/architect Joseph Urban.

Let's see if this works...
here MIGHT be a recent picture of the Orpheum for comparison...
I was in the Akron years ago & it indeed georgeous
An atmospheric theater was one where the ceiling was blue & lights twinkled on & off to simulate stars. A machine called a brenograph was a projection device that simulated clouds with the star effect. Add to that fake trees on both sides of the auditorium & the atmosphere was like sitting outside @ night with stars & clouds overhead watching a movie
Years ago, I visited an old theater that was a warehouse for a furniture store. I touched one of the remaining trees & it disintegrated in my hand after almost 60 years
I love it that IBDB has this new feathre! But it is sometimes sad to see these pictures of theatres that are no longer there. for example, when I was visiting LA last week, I took a lot of pictures of abandoned theatres. The most beautiful was the Courier theatre.
The Los Angeles is a beauty. Many commercials & music videos are filmed in the lobby. Another good one is the Orpheum
