I love the Stanford theater in Palo Alto (CA)....a smaller venue, to be sure, but the morrocan design is wonderful. They still have and utilize the original Wurlitzer for their silent movie festivals, and it sounds fantastic.
Alas, they are closed for renovations right now, so no summer silents for me..
Mr Roxy, have you visited the Stanford theater?
Nope
I no longer criss cross the country visiting theaters. There is nothing in the world like the sound of listening to a pipe organ in a theater
The organ and the organ player at the Stanford are absolutely stunning! I watched Chaplin's "The Gold Rush" and "The Crowd" with the original movie music accompanying it and was entranced. I have since been back many, many times to watch movies there and will go again when it re-opens.
I am sorry you won't have a chance to see the theater; I have no photos of the theater to load (my system won't support that kind of "work activity"); I'm sure Magruder could find one, though!
Looks like they're open again. Take a look at their website!
Stanford Theatre
I would love to start a photo album of all the theatres and their marquees (spl) and then as each show movies into that theatre i would add to that page, I'm def doing it.
thanks magruder and morosco!
It's such a fantastic place! I can't wait to go back.
I wish there was a theatre like the Stanford in my area. Did you guys take a look at their schedule of movies? How wonderful!
Yeah..I go there all the time for their festivals. And the concession stand has popcorn and drinks for $1-$2! The organ plays between the movies, and occasionally David Packard (the computer guy who owns the theater) comes out to give information about how he got hold the the film we are about to watch.
AND....a big plus....the theater audience is polite and respectful of the movies. Unlike the Castro in SF, where audiences feel it's ok to talk back to the screen and boo and hiss when villains come on, and break into useless applause whenever the herione shows up.
The Stanford is usually a full audience, as well, which makes seeing a movie the The Awful Truth that much more enjoyable. Listening to the theater still laughing at 60 year old movies is a great treasure.
