I know many people hate these types of threads, but I don't... anyhoo, where are these new musicals going to open up?
Musicals We Know About for the Upcoming Season:
A Chorus Line (headed for the Schoenfeld)
Les Mis (the Broadhurst)
Company
110 In the Shade (Studio 54)
High Fidelity
Pajama Game
Mary Poppins (the New Amsterdam)
Time's They Are A'Changin (Atkinson - thanks munk!)
Possibilities:
Grey Gardens
A Tale of Two Cities
The Wiz
Pal Joey
West Side Story
A Little Night Music
(and I know I'm missing some!)
According to Talkin' Broadway, there are very few currently dark theaters: (discounting the theaters already booked - I'm not sure if all of these are musical-capable, either)
Cort (Barefoot closes 5/21)
Atkinson (Odd Couple closes 6/4)
Barrymore (ROF closes 4/30)
Jacobs (Three Days closes 6/1
Longacre (Well closes soon)
And, of course, I didn't even list any upcoming plays. Looks like the theater shortage is going to create a huge log jam once again. Thoughts?
Edited because I did indeed forget a whole bunch!

Twyla Tharp's show has the Atkinson.
It's possible that COMPANY will take the O'Neil.

Realistically:
The Royale-Jacobs is committed for Martin Short--
but the following could be vacant within a reasonable amount of time:
Hilton
Belasco
Palace
Kerr
Longacre
Booth
Music Box
Let's wait and see how the so-so reviews impact Wedding Singer

"It's possible that COMPANY will take the O'Neil"
Why would you say that. Sweeney is doing good business and is selling tickets through December. I think Company will go into a different theatre.
And isn't Ligth in the Piazza closing sometime this summer?

Posted: 4/28/06 at 5:32pmYes, but the Vivian Beaumont isn't a theater you just "book" like the others. Lincoln Center will stage their own shows there.

Posted: 4/28/06 at 5:43pmIsn't Legally Blonde due to open in about a year? I would assume it would occupy one of those vacant theaters.

Stoppard's Coast of Utopia is scheduled to play the Beaumont in the Fall.
The Ford Center is now The Hilton, by the way.

Posted: 4/28/06 at 5:48pmYeah, Blonde is opening in March 07. I would guess it would need a rather large theater. I mean, nothing huge like "tale of two cities" but something reasonably big.

timote316 , Three Days of Rain does not close 6/1. I am seeing it on 6/8, so unless I haven't heard something today I am pretty sure it runs a little longer than that. While we are speculating about available theaters, it is possible that the St. James might be available in '07 if The Producers' numbers don't improve soon.

Posted: 4/28/06 at 7:12pmWhat's wrong with The Producers' numbers? Do you actually bother to read the weekly box office reports? It's attendance figures have been in the 80s and 90s for months now, grossing $850,000+ per week (break even is $600K). It dipped for a couple of weeks back in February -- as did every other show -- but has been back to being one of the highest grossers on Broadway ever since. During its 5 year run it's only failed to break even TWO WEEKS. It won't be going ANYWHERE any time soon.

THE PRODUCERS will hang around until YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is ready to come in...
Are you sure SWEENEY is actually selling tickets until Decemeber? I think somebody just said that the producers told the cast they were planning on running it until December. That of course doesn't mean they will...

Posted: 4/28/06 at 8:16pm^ Yes Sweeney is selling tickets until December. I've been on telecharge lately and they are selling up to December right now.
