Chevstriss- Really? I can't remember when there was last a production of Woolf in my region. Though Neil Simon seems to be the playwright of choice...Woolf would probably be considered awfully "edgy."

re: There Ain't No Justice On Broadway

I have to agree with Michael Bennett. I don't live particularly far from New York, and I can't think of the last time a local theatre company did Virginia Woolf. I also agree that it takes effort by the audience to appreciate this play, and it's not exactly a "fun" night out, no matter how wonderful the production. Theatre these days has to compete with everything from cable and satellite tv to video games, and frankly, audiences want formula entertainment as often as not. I have to admit, I'm often equally lazy. And Mr. Roxy's right. It isn't justice, but it's the way of our popculture world.

I must disagree with Jose.

Irwin held his own & was one of the best things about WAOVW.

I am in complete agreement with Jose. Irwin is a great physical comedian who was woefully miscast in this production. Nice try, though.

re: There Ain't No Justice On Broadway

I can't say that I see Virginia Woolf as much of a draw these days. It's a modern classic, but just about anyone that has wanted to see the show has seen it. I saw a superlative production with Glenda Jackson and John Lithgow. (BTW- Mr. Lithgow was magnetic. I went to see Ms. Jackson, but left a true fan of Mr. Lithgow.) I don’t feel that I need to or really want to see another production of this show.

Even though it’s a humorous, in a very dark way, play, it’s still a long evening with two not terribly enjoyable people. When I look at ticket prices, I think do I really want to spend $50 - 90 for a ticket to that? Or would I rather see something new? Usually, new wins out, but then it’s rare for me to see a show more than once (especially at Broadway prices). For my money, I want to have a unique experience. That’s why revivals have to be something extraordinary for me to want to see them. Kathleen Turner was not a big enough draw for me. Now, if it had been someone like Jane Fonda or Merle Streep in that part, I’d have been at that theatre in a heartbeat.

""Julius Caesar," starring Denzel Washington, has recouped its $3 million capitalization, according to the show's producers. Magic day was Sunday. Investors and participants now look to share about $1 million in profits before the production shutters June 12."

Uhm, but a three million dollar investment for one million dollars in return is hardly worth it.

I guess Irwin got the Tony ( voted by his peers ) because he was miscast. He beat out some very stiff competition I believe. I also think the critics were thought he was great in the role. To each his own . If you did not like him, that is your opinion but many other people, including his fellow actors, disagree

I thought Irwin gave the performance of a lifetime.
I loved the production.
Jose, Irwin was brilliant! I found the acting riveting.
I loved every second and it is a shame it can't extend.
I don't think it is the kind of show people could sit through more then once as it is so depressing, but it was the best play I have seen so far this year.
(I still have not seen Doubt on Broadway)
(The night I was there I ran into Denis O'Hare. Such a sweetie!)

History has shown that it is the spectacular musical that draws the crowds, both domestic and foreign.

Have had no draw to go see it, have seen almost everything else on Broadway though. Kathleen Turner is also a no draw for me, no interest in that voice anymore (sounds too much like a smoker to me), and I can listen to people arguing at home.....

Denzel Washington was in a play and it bombed, but that was because his performance was awful. I saw it and I was practically cheering every time he left the stage, just because he was gone and I could enjoy William Sadler's performance.

re: There Ain't No Justice On Broadway

Yet again, I need to point out that Julius Caesar did not bomb. It performed to near capacity throughout its run, recouped, made $1 million in profit, and sold a ton of premium tickets, jacking its average ticket price to the third highest on Broadway, right behind Wicked and 700 Sundays. It might not have had good reviews or good word of mouth, but it was a box office winner.

re: There Ain't No Justice On Broadway

Few classic plays that have been revived in the last 20 years have had exceptional runs. Many, of course, were planned as limited engagements tied to the availability of certain stars.

Serious drama has never ignited the box office. ANGELS IN AMERICA lasted a year with both parts in rep. SIDE MAN (one of the finest new dramas I have seen in the past 10 years) managed a limited run.DEATH OF A SALESMAN in 1999 ran only 274 perfs.
The same play in 1984 with Dustin Hoffman ran 88 perfs.

Even the orig prod of VIRGINIA WOOLF ran only a year and a half.

Sadly even the BWW community contributes to this. We have kids here proudly proclaiming they have seen RENT and WICKED umpteen times, but have any of them bothered to see VIRGINIA WOOLF? How can you expect tourists to behave differently when even the so-called Braodway fans don't support quality theatre and pour their money going back to see junk shows over and over.

The abrupt closing of V.WOOLF is just the tip of a very troubling iceberg.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
