Can someone please explain how this song fit into the show? I didn't see it at the Atlantic.

There once was a pi-rate, who loved a wo-man! She was the one he slew the dragon foo-or....
Yah, that's prolly the main reason it was cut..it's a beautiful song but it doesn't forward the plot or relationships in any sort of meaningful way. It was sung by Wendla and Melchior and opened up the second act--they and all the kids are at the foot of a preacher's lecturn as the preacher interjects throughout the song.
I think it was written to fill in some of the past history of these characters--Ilsa mentions in the show that she, Moritz, Melchoir and Wendla used to play pirates when they were young. However, because the song is just about a pirate, it is a little abstract and doesn't actually tell us anything about their childhood together.

they sailed for a little
a little, little, little...
was stuck in my head for a good while after I saw it.
pretty, but what??
It was supposed to be included on the CD and wasn't. I enjoyed the song when I saw it at the Atlantic.
On iTunes, there's a version of Duncan Sheik singing it.
