Does anyone know of any other legit recordings of this song? I'm obsessed with it. I have:
Bernadette's version on Sondheim Etc
Lee Remick's on the OBC
Ann Harada at Broadway Unplugged
and Bernadette again at the AWCW concert.
Are there any other recordings of this great song on cd?
I forgot Ann Harada sang it at Broadway Unplugged
How is her recording?
It's alright. Her voice takes some getting used too. My boyfriend hated it and screamed "turn that crap off), but I like it more with each listen.

Dawn Upshaw has a version on her I Wish It So CD. She's one of the few opera singers who can pull off Broadway songs, and her "There Won't Be Trumpets" is very pleasant.

La Streisand did a version, and mixed it with "A Quiet Thing" from FLORA, THE RED MENNACE.
what album is that on, Dgrant?
Since I saw it on stage, I have always been partial to the 1976 London cast recording of Side By Side By Sondheim sung by Julie McKenzie, David Kernan, and (long before she became Daphne's mother on 'Frasier') Millicent Martin

Maybe I am totally wrong here but.....
Ann Harada is either really flat or just pushing too hard on the live recording but only on the final "Trum PEEEEEEETTS" until then it sounds fine but that last note is horrible.

Dawn Upshaw's version is great. I agree with WWOTC that she is one of the few opera singers who can pull off musical theatre songs. My favourite track on that album is 'What More Do I Need' - pure joy. My favourite recording of 'There Won't Be Trumpets', though is definitely Bernadette's. Mandy Patinkin also sings this on his 'Oscar And Steve' album.
I forgot Babra did that. I have that version, it's quite good. I have Mandy's album but I can't remember his version.
I love Dawn Upshaw's song selection for "I Wish it So". I'm gonna buy it right now.

I also like Millicent Martin on SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM.
By the way, I went all through elementary to high school with Dawn Upshaw. She lived four houses down from me. We were in Jr, high and high school chior together. In high school we did WEST SIDE STORY - she was Maria, I was Doc.
Wow, I didn't realize I owned so many versions of this song. I'll listen to Side by Side when I get home. I love that version.
Her version is certainly not the best sung, but I find Lee Remick's rendition really moving. It's tense and edgy, like there is a lot at stake for the character. And the tempo at the end verges on spinning out of control, which I love. I was very surprised and pleased with it when it popped up on the first CD release of Anyone Can Whistle, after growing up with the LP which didn't include it.
I can't imagine doing this show without Trumpets. Is it included in the script when you get the rights?
Yes, it is available in the script and score. I know it was cut from the original production in favor of Arthur Laurents' "not one word" monologue for Fay that precedes it ... but really, the song is much more important than just getting a big hand for a piece of comedy. Can't understand why they made such a stupid decision.
Well when Laurents wants something, he usually won't shut up until he gets it.
Dawn Upshaw's version is really great- actually, the whole CD is. She makes "Glitter and Be Gay" sound quite easy- and for someone who's sung as much bel canto as she has, it probably is.
"Glitter and Be Gay" is one of my favorite showtunes ever. I heard a clip of her version on Amazon, and bought the cd right after. It sounds great.
Yes, Patinkin did do a version. I like it but then I know not everyone likes his passionate delivery. If you aren't a fan of his style, you may not care for it, but I do...and I love the song too!
Carolee Carmello does a to-die-for version recorded at the Wall to Wall Sondheim this past March. I love this version so much!
