To tell you the truth, I taped the show and fast forwarded through most of it. The Tonys have become an embarrassing attempt to attract middle america in hopes of making them view a show they would otherwise not watch by putting celebrities from other mediums onto the stage.

I say, revamp this thing...put it on PBS and be done with it. Let the theater community...those of us who love the theater and WANT to watch see the THEATER actors onstage and stop trying to be cute and glitzy. Middle America STILL doesn't watch and those of us who love the theater are embarrassed by the spectacle. And PUH-LEEZ get someone other than Jackman next year? Sorry guys. I know there are Hugh fans on this board, but I find him bland and boring and even if the jokes they gave him were lame, he did a bad job of delivering them...

I love Aretha, but really she and Hugh weren't even on the same stage singing that song. Nor did they hit the same notes at the same time or even say the same words at the same time. Poor Sondheim must have been reeling after that performance.

You couldn't have said it more perfectly. Let's get rid of this garbage that the broadcast networks (CBS in this case) insist on throwing into our celebration of Broadway. The 7 awards that were presented before the ceremony could have been easily included in the 3 hour broadcast if they would have cut out all the junk that had nothing to do with this season on Broadway. At the very least they could have included the lifetime achievement award in the regular broadcast, I mean come on! Not to mention that some winners were cut off from their speeches. I don't care if they went over their 50 seconds or whatnot, this is their moment and we as viewers want to partake in it. Jeez, I totally agree, just take it away from CBS and give it to PBS, you'll get the same viewers and we'll have a ceremony that we can all cherish rather than one that embarasses our community.

A scaled-down version of the Tonys on PBS is an ideal solution. The nominated shows could be shown to a much better advantage than they are on CBS. The Tonys this year came off badly. No wonder most of the public, if they even know about B'way at all, thinks it is something antiquated.

I have to say that the movie stars presenting the awards p*iss me off too... There are enough people on Broadway to handle it, thank you. Like, give Idina something other than the freakin' TECH awards!!!!!!!

The Tony broadcast could have some integrity by moving to PBS. With this move,it could actually become a night about theatre.

Does anyone think it would be better for the performances to be pre-recorded at the theatre's they are performed. Watching The Light in the Piazza I thought about how much more intriguing it would be to see it performed at the Beaumont with ALL of it's beautiful scenery. Radio City's huge stage make shows with smaller sets (Spelling Bee, Dirty Rotten Scoundrals) look like community theatre. Another plus would be having the orchestra the cast is used to playing (Sweet Charity, anoyone?).

"Like, give Idina something other than the freakin' TECH awards!!!!!!!"

The technical awards are as much a part of the Tony's as the award for Best Musical. The fact that Idina was allowed to present seven of them is a privelege. People underrate the technical awards but the fact is that they have just as much meaning to the recipients and the other members of their craft as the performance awards.

No one is underrating technical aspects of shows, considering that I was in stagecraft for all FOUR years of college. I'm saying, that they want to SELL these awards to the public to gain awareness and support for the theatre arts. They SHOULD have broadcast those awards and given Idina, who happens to be one of the most popular BW actresses to people that are NOT very theatre savy, the airtime SHE and the AWARDS she presented deserved! I feel the same way about Norberts speech getting cut off at the end and the censoring of GBS in the beginning. Everyone who is a theatre newbie or novice watches for the big awards at the end because that's where all the hype is. It's sad, really. Sorry if I came *off* as the tech awards are unimportant...they certainly are not.

No problem at all, it's understandably difficult to make something sound important to one community and unimportant to another. I just hate it when I get a sense that someone doesn't appreciate technical theatre (which you obviously appreciate very much) it just grates my nerves when I think about the number of actors who think they could carry a Broadway show by mood-lighting and such!

Actually, during an early rehearsal, the Tonys show did in fact include a version of "You're Nothing Without Me," the joke being it was banter between Hugh J. and his agent. The producers cut it in favor of the "dance" medley.
