Yes, great news! Though I am slightly pissed off LOL I've only just booked my next trip to New York and I'll be flying home on the 21st October - two days before the Ragtime previews begin!

Hopefully this time round this fantastic show will get the success it deserves - and will still be running by the time I get to New York again next year!

The new production of Ragtime is absolutely splendid. While the original cast still has a place in my heart, this production is not one to be missed. Everything about this production is much more simplistic than the original, from the staging to the sets. Yet, everything works well with each other to evoke the feeling in America at the beginning of the 20th century. The cast has a lot to live up to and they do incredibly well at creating characters that make you forget about the perfect original Broadway cast that included Brian Stokes Mitchel, Marin Mazzie and Audra McDonald. If you happen to be in NYC during its run, I highly recommend that you see this revival.

As much as I would love for this production to win the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, it will be up against (what seems to be) a strong year for revivals. Bye Bye Birdie, Finian's Rainbow and A Little Night Music are set for the 2009-10 Broadway season.

The original was just too big and tried too hard.
I didn't see it in New York but saw it at the gorgeous Oriental Theatre in Chicago. and it was totally soul less.
Its a a great piece.

I was lucky enough to see the original production of Ragtime in Toronto - knowing absolutely nothing about it beforehand. And everything about it totally blew me away. I also saw the touring production in Chicago, which was not as good as Toronto - and saw the concert staging in Cardiff (which had virtually the same cast that later went on to do it in the West End). I am SO gutted I'm going to miss it in New York in October. (But there are still a lot of things I'm really looking forward to seeing on that trip, so I'm sure they'll make up for it!)

Ragtime is one of my top five favourite musicals.

Though that is based upon the OBC and not the good-cast-but-inadequate-budget London production.

Do people think this revival is better than the London production?

Well, I thought the original Broadway production was mediocre - but then, I've never found the Ahrens/Flahrety shows rewarding.

All the great reports and comments about this new production, however, will probably motivate me to give it another chance.

I have found every Flaherty/Ahrens show I've seen (and I've seen all of them part from Man of No Importance) to be nothing short of fantastic. Ragtime is probably their "piece de resistance" but The Glorious Ones/Dessa Rose are also pretty awesome and even their major flop show, "My Favorite Year", is full of stunning songs. The quality of writing in their scores is way ahead of almost any composer/lyricist team currently writing for musical theatre IMO. It's a real shame that more of their work has not been staged in the UK.

Totally agree Bob, except for one of their shows called Seussical. It was a megaflop on Broadway in 2000/2001, and it's not hard to realise why - it combined pretty much every Dr Seuss book ever into one VERY confusing plot.

Anyone wanna contribute to my 2010 NYC trip fund? :)

There are going to be way too many shows I want to see playing early next year: Ragtime, La Cage, Addams Family, Catch Me If You Can and Spider-Man, plus others still to be announced.
