And now Best Musical can be added to the list!
#6re: Three Acting Oliviers for Hairspray!!!
Posted: 3/9/08 at 6:04pmI still think it's funny how the they consolidate Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress into one category: Best Supporting Performance.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Posted: 3/9/08 at 6:10pmI LOVE Hairspray, but Parade was so robbed. Parade should have FOR SURE won best leading actress, director and musical.
#8re: Three Acting Oliviers for Hairspray!!!
Posted: 3/9/08 at 6:11pmNot only that, there is no separate category for director of a musical.
#9re: Three Acting Oliviers for Hairspray!!!
Posted: 3/9/08 at 6:13pmI wish they would produce a London Hairspray recording so I could hear Ball.

Posted: 3/9/08 at 6:25pmI think Parade was robbed as well!!!! I LOVE Hairspray but I think Bertie should have gotten Best Actor rather than Michael!!!

"Parade was robbed"
Maybe it was, but the "serious" musicals cleaned up last year and so there would have been a sway towards the "fun" musicals this year, and it's been a long time since one of those got such right-across-the-board good reviews here.
I saw both and it would have been a hard decision to choose between them.

I saw both as well and thought Parade was miles ahead of Hairspray as far as acting was concerned. Granted, I've always been drawn to more angsty material/characters, but I definitely did not feel as connected to anyone in Hairspray as much as I felt for every single character in Parade.
Hairspray was good, but it was absolutely nowhere near Parade IMO
Does the earth really spin around the sun?
What's it matter in the least?
What's real to me ain't real to everyone.

I SO agree with theaterguy 11. Parade is a far stronger show than Hairspray and was far better directed. Also - much as I love Michael Ball and admire Leanne Jones's energetic performance - Bertie Carvel and Lara Pulver's performances were astonishing.

Quoting from the report on Whatsonstage.com regarding their win for Best Musical --
Best New Musical (presented by Alan Dale) – Hairspray’s American creators Mark O’Donnell, Thomas Meehan, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman were out in force to collect the trophy for Best New Musical. “To have the experience on Broadway that we had, you never would have thought that could be topped,” said Shaiman, “but you Brits … you just keep making our dreams come true over and over!” Meehan added “there’s no place like London, there’s no theatre like London”. And O’Donnell admitted that he was such an Anglophile growing up in Ohio that “I attempted to talk with a British accent - it’s wonderful to think tonight that in some way my love has been requited.”
Marc Shaiman et al -- you've done it again!

Posted: 3/10/08 at 1:07amI think Tracie was good in Hairspray but Shaun was just OUTSTANDING in Parade... his 'That's What He Said' was worth the award alone! Also as much as I can't believe it's Michael's first Olivier, I think Bertie has done just an AMAZING job!!!! I thought Lara was good but I thought Leanne was easily just as brilliant!

I'm thrilled for all involved in Hairspray, and I'm delighted to see Michael finally win his Olivier.

Hey, Princeton78 -- Can't help noticing your avatar of Marion Cotillard.
During her Oscar press media appearance, she sang a portion of PADAM, PADAM...and there's a bit of a connection to Michael Ball there. One of his most acclaimed songs in his memorable tour de force at the Donmar Warehouse ( called ALONE TOGETHER) is his version of PADAM, PADAM, a song associated with Edith Piaf. Just goes to show how versatile our newly minted Olivier best actor is
