Three Mo' Tenors Coming to Little Shubert Theatre
Three Mo' Tenors, featuring a trio of African-American tenors who perform a mix of operatic music, jazz, gospel, soul, spirituals, Broadway and the blues, has set dates for an off-Broadway production at the Little Shubert Theatre. The show will begin previews on September 12 and open on September 27, directed and choreographed by Marion J. Caffey. According to the Three Mo' Tenors website, the off-Broadway run will continue through January 27, 2008.
Three Mo' Tenors began in 2001, when RCA released the original live recording of the show and it was televised on PBS' Great Performances. Since then, it has toured the country with two casts of three singers who take the stage in alternating performances. The current cast consists of Kenneth Alston, James N. Berger Jr., Ramone Diggs, Duane A. Moody, Victor Robertson and Phumzile Sojola.
Among the songs included on the Three Mo' Tenors CD are "Recondita Armonia," "Let the Good Times Roll," "Le Reve," "Set Me Free/Hit the Road Jack/Georgia on My Mind," "Superstar/Let's Get It On" and "Let the Praise Begin/It's My Time to Be Blessed."

I saw Victor Robertson's first performance as Rodolfo when Baz Luhrmann's La Bohème opened in LA. He was cute.

Has anyone seen this recently? The guys were great, but why all of the mediocre opera and embarrassing out-of-context Les Miz numbers at the top? We almost left. I am glad we didn't, though because the guys were really fun & talented once they pushed through the first 30 minutes and got to the real ensemble stuff that they sang really well. By the end, the entire audience was on it's feet.
Once again, lots of talent on stage, but mediocre, formulaic direction at best.
Any thoughts?

Posted: 1/7/08 at 6:44pmI never said it was Shakespeare so calm down. My point is that it is poorly conceived. I feel bad for the great singers & musicians, because they don't shine for the first section and they blow us out of the water for the rest of the show.

Posted: 1/7/08 at 6:54pmI know it is not the same guys, but I saw a clip of 3 other guys doing it and it just didn't excite me. However, I do want to see 3 Mo' Divas. I think that is hitting NYC soon and it will be here in Denver this coming May.

I saw 3 Mo' Divas last night for my birthday. Well, these women can sing! It is worth the price of admission just to hear Nova Payton sing "Summertime". She knocked it out of the box. She also does a very good version of Defying Gravity. The format of the show is pretty much the same as the Tenors' show and is conceived, directed and choreographed by the same man that did Tenors, Marion J. Caffey. A fun night that is pretty fast paced and flies by. The only downfall was the costumes. I just wanted to take the costume designer out shopping to put these Divas in better dresses! If the show hits your town, check it out!!
