After hearing Terrance Mann over-act horribly to the point of hilarity in the Cast Recording of Beauty & the Beast:

Listen to:
"And then that witch was gone, and left me in this STATE!!"
"You like it?" "It's yours"

I think Tim Curry would be hilarious as the Beast.

That is funny. The craziest Mann moment is in "Human Again" where she asks him to have dinner and he goes "...OOHH YYESS!!" Wrong on sooo many levels.

Funny you should mention that--I remember reading John Simon's review of the show in his recently published anthology and he commented how Terrence Mann looked like "a pouty Tim Curry" in his beast makeup (or something to that effect).

Terrence Mann has been compared to Tim Curry throughout his career. He's talked about it in many interviews. Even when he went in for his Cats audition.

And playing Frank-n-Furter probably didn't help matters. I adore Terrance Mann. He can ham it up all he wants.

Terrence Mann was hilarious on the cast recording. I'm not sure Tim Curry could play it. I'm not a big fan of his. When i saw him is Spamalot, I didn't feel like he was giving it his all. He seemed a bit bored. The only part I have ever really seen him excited about (and giving it his all) was his portrayl of 'Wodsworth' in the movie Clue.

I love his Wadsworth in Clue. Actually, I love that entire movie. So many hilarious moments. One of my favorite moments is the great Madeline Kahn singing a harmony in "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."

Well, considering that Tim Curry is in his fifties and can't really sing...I don't think the Beast would be a very good role for him.

yes adamgreer! I love that part too. also her line: "Men are like Kleenx; soft, strong, and disposable." so true!!!!

and distinctive. so true too. he can't sing. I don't even know if that was him on the cast recording of spamalot. he sounded so different live.

I still think his "If I Can't Love Her" from the OBC recording is one of the best I've heard. Maybe I just need to hear more people sing it.

Am I understanding you correctly, that you thought he sounded better on the recording than he did live? As it happens, I do think he can sing, but thought he sounded immeasurably better live than on the recording.

no, i mean he sounded real different, like it wasn't his voice. at all. and I had seen him live before I got it. and when I listened to "Laker Girls," I thought it was someone else talking or singing his part. I didn't get it. Same with "I'm All Alone" just doesn't sound like him.

good for you that you think he can sing. I mean, he can sing, but it's just not that good. If he enjoyed the role more, he might have done a better job.

I personally really love Tim, so my opinion is probably biased. I think he can sing well enough for the parts he plays, if that makes any sense. It's kind of like Nathan Lane (who is my all-time favorite actor ever...ever...), he isn't an amazing singer, but he sings well enough for the parts he plays, not to mention his acting skills bring so much more to the role. I suppose it all depends on what you're looking for in an actor.

PS: I didn't think Tim sounded much different on the recording than live. Hm. Whatever...

I hold a degree in Musical Theatre from Montclair State University. It is useless. Now I'm funny for money. Oh, and I sing.

"Good for me"? Gee, thanks. re: Tim Curry as THE BEAST As for his enjoyment of the role, or lack thereof...I doubt either one of us are in a position to comment on that. Did he tell you he wasn't enjoying the role? If not, you're making an assumption based on what you saw in his performance, and that assumption may or may not be accurate. Despite the recent rash of negative comments here, plenty of people enjoyed his performance, and thought he looked like he was having a great time. Maybe he was having an off night when you saw him. Maybe he didn't feel good physically. Or maybe you just didn't care for his interpretation. {shrug}

It's kinda nice to see there's someone else out there who does. I was starting to get really, really lonely. re: Tim Curry as THE BEAST

Interesting that you thought he sounded the same live and on the OCR. I remember sitting in the theatre and hoping the performance I'd just heard would be duplicated on the OCR, and was rather disappointed that, IMO, it wasn't. C'est la vie, and all that.

Terrence Mann sounds like he's overacting because of the director. Disney obviously wanted the show to be a cartoon rather than dramatic (which it oculd have been). It's not Terrence's fault at all, he's just follwoing the direction.

Terrence's voice is nice to listen to, but I always loathed the "OHH YEEESS" on the OBC. And "So that must mean HE'S THE KING!". That was the way they wanted him to act? So is that how Beasts act in the show?

For those of you judging Terry's performance by the CD...you really needed to see him play the Beast. You missed a lot!
He brought a ton of acting and emotion to the role....not like some of the growling Chewbacca's walking about the stage, not quite sure what to do with that hairy rug. Breathing life into a wooly 6 ft. monster is not an easy feat. He took the beast from a harsh monster to an awkward goliath to a vulnerable creature that really wanted to show some emotion. It was Disney, and Terry at his best. Audiences loved him!

His "If I Can't Love Her" live was one of the best acted and sung versions I've seen so far. He was the original and one of the best Beast's to play the role.

How many of you saw his Rum Tug Tugger? The man is one hell of an actor that sometimes ran hot and cold...but certaintly not with Beast.
