Posted: 11/29/05 at 6:57pmDont you hate it when you have to sing, but your sinuses are keeping you from singing? I have the worst sinus and allergy problems and am constantly conjested. But, MUCINEX, an over-the-counter deconjestant had been my saving grace. It helps you to sleep, clears up the nasal and air passage ways, and relieves throat soarness. Definetly try it.

I used this during one of my runs last winter when I was really sick and it really does work! I was REALLY sick (to the point where I couldn't even speak), but it broke down the congestion a lot, moreso than anything else I've ever tried.
I'll definitely second that suggestion. :)

Posted: 11/29/05 at 7:37pmI have horrible sinus problems that cause sinus headaches. Last week, I started doing sinus rinses. It is kind of gross, but it is a miracle worker. I have not had one sinus headache since I started. I use www.sinusrinse.com kit that I picked up at a drugstore. Sinus problems often cause sore throats too so it is good if you are trying to protect your throat.

Posted: 11/29/05 at 8:59pmI have found that Mucinex also helps the symptoms of acid reflux, believe it or not, because acid reflux sometimes causes mucus, which makes you want to clear your throat all day, which can cause severe sore throat. My throat doctor recommended it to me.

Mucinex used to be called Humibid and sold by prescription only...raise a glass (of herbal tea) to those who made it over-the-counter.
I use it all the time.

Posted: 11/29/05 at 11:20pmTwo other products for singers to keep in their medicine cabinets are: EMERGEN-C and AIRBORNE. These are more preventative however. They are a preformers best friends during the super busy holiday cold and allergy season.

I do the sinus rinse out, too. (Or as I like to refer to it... douching my nose... )
My voice coach told me to use water, baking soda and salt (I feel like I'm missing an ingredient... I haven't done it in a while), though, and not to use the saline stuff. I've heard that can really dry up your nose and cause irritation.
Either way, its really gross but totally works. I'd be sitting in my dressing room with nastiness just pouring out of my nose. It was really pleasant, but hey, at least I could breathe again!

How often/ how long before you sing should/can you use it?
I have every intention of buying some very soon, I have "juries" next week(sing in front of the Theatre/Music dept...important stuff)!

It works in about twenty minutes and stays for about 8 hours. Another tip: do not use a nose spray with SALINE in it- it has a tendancy to irritate the nasal cavity and dry up the nose, making it very uncomfortable to perform.
And its pronounced "Mu se nex" not "Mu ca nex"-that would be really disgusting though-LOL

sooo mucinex IS guafenissen...which is Humabid if you buy the brand, which is what my doctor recommends for congestion...HOWEVER be careful..because once that stuff (the mucus) starts dripping on your chords you can get laryingitis from the irritation which is what happens to me..i only take it at night after a performance and before bed ...everyone is different...its always best to check with your doctor! i also LOOOVE love love, warm jello to drink as tea..about 2 or 3 heaping tablespoons depending on how sweet you like it.
for those of you questioning my identity last week...THIS is a REAL CLUE...my jello habit was well known and fans of the show sent it to me regularly! heehee!!! i also love constant comment decaf tea with a teaspoon of sugar...if you're dry, a little sugar coats and soothes the chords and membranes in the mouth nicely...although some people get gluggy...not me..also...and this is going to be sooo strange to some of you...potato chips!!! the greasy kind..lays..the grease feels amazing! hahahaha!!

I looove Emergen-c, HATE HATE HATE airborne... it tastes so disgusting to me. Earlier this year, I was getting ready for my school's opera Gianni Schicchi, my choir's 2 week national tour, a solo competition, and was directing a dance concert on top of doing homework and not sleeping and it definitely took a HUGE toll on me. I lost my voice a few days before our opera opened and had to suck down all KINDS of things to get it back. I drank water, tea and emergen-c non-stop, and I took stuff called sore throat laryngitis, goldenseal (which is good for sore throats, but tastes like espresso run through a dirty sock... not that I'd know...) and entertainer's secret (which really didn't do anything but made my throat feel better for a few minutes and tasted good) various times throughout the day and by the grace of God, I was able to make it through all of my stuff alive. Lesson learned: no matter what any director tells you to do, your health ultimately comes before any rehearsal... so take care of yourself!

PS Clariten D and Vicks vaporub work wonders for allergies, as I've come to learn going to college this semester.

Does it help for when you have a frog in ur throat? I CONSTANTLY have to clear my throat when I sing, and it bugs me so much.
Throat Coast also works great, if you can stand the taste (which is less than pleasent).
