oh my god....I thought the national tour was the only version that utilized the highly ineffective and quite laughable remote controlled miniature ship effect!!
the BROADWAY version of the show also relied on a remote controlled miniature ship to act out the "iceberg run in"? How sad.

Victoria Clark told some amusing stories about Titanic on Seth Rudetsky's show last week. The "Ship sinking" effect was so troublesome, that they added a "Four Minute Intermission" to allow it to be set up. She said that for a lengthy period of previews, one scene would end and a voice would announce "there will now be a Four Minute Intermission" and they would raise the houselights a bit. Then, when the techs got the set ready, they'd continue. She said the audience would laugh and crack jokes. (I bet!)
She also said that when the effect finally worked and they could go seamlessly into it, the first night it all happened right, she noticed the stagehands backstage were crying, moved by the show.

I dunno if it's still archived but it makes for a great read. also the coffee table book for the musical that has the libretto goes into a lot of detail about the preview performances and additional "miniature ship" sequences that were cut as well as scenes and songs that had to be written in order to cover for some elaborate scene changes behind the drop. my favorite is the "porthole" scene with the reprise of "To Be A Captain". it had only been written because they needed six minutes for a scene change and it ended up being one of my favorite scenes in the entire show...

I must have been one of the only ones who thought this was boring. It has a few musical moments I thought were beautiful...but on the whole...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

TITANIC had a well-documented troubled preview period. They originally wanted to open April 14, 1997, which would have been the 85th anniversary, but work continued and the opening postponed. When it finally opened, it got ONE favourable review. And Rosie O'Donnell had her talk show on then and she loved the show and kept plugging it, giving blocks of seats to her audience members. The Tony nominations helped boost ticket sales and the win ensured a long run, helped a great deal when the movie TITANIC came out the following December.
The show was problematic:
-too many characters and no central character to focus on.
-some scenic effects were spectacular but, some scenes that cried out for opulence were sadly inadequate (example: The main dining room.)
-the Director seemed to have spent all of his time working on the stage effects and leaving the cast to fend for themselves.
-the book and score spent much time trying to establish identities for the supporting characters but failed to give them much to play
I can easily understand some people hearing about the first act curtain (with a model of the ship sailing across to the rising crescendo of the orchestra. This was one of the most brilliant scenes in the whole show. How I wish that kind of imagination had been in effect throughout the rest.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I loved the score and hated the show - yes, it is possible. I thought the sets at the end of Act 1 were laughable - the ship gliding on a smooth layer of aluminum foil (?) heading towards the iceberg.
I was extremely disappointed in the show.

Posted: 7/15/05 at 4:22pmWell let me just say that I think Titanic is one of the most informative and tear gerking musicals that broadway has yet to see. I myself was in a recreation of Titanic which was an experience of a lifetime. The way that each character has something special about them was so wonderfu, and how well the facts are layed out is quite amazing. I recommend that anyone who didnt get a chance to see Titanic on broadway tries to either see a recreation of it or atleast gets the sound track. Trust me it's definatly worth it!!!

My friends did it last year as part of a TEEN SUMMER THEATER program, I didnt get to see it, but they kept talking about it and so I borrowed the cast recording from one them, and i love it... its so sad and it makes you feel connected to the people of the TITANIC.
I remember seeing it on Rosie's show, and the cast bought some Titanic memorablia from a kid to help fund his mom's cancer treatment
