Hello talented beings of Broadway/L.A. etc.
How did you get your start as a regularly gigging performer? My best friend is a very talented singer. She has been singing since she was 4 years of age in everything from competitive competitions to lead singing in bands around the bay. Now she wants to start making real money from performing? How did you do this? What's your story? Can you give me any advice to share with my friend on how she can do this? Does she need to stick to one genre of music? Should she be learning to dance and go do musicals/shows in theater? What do you think?

Real money? There is no real money in performing unless you are one of the few who become a star. The performing arts is a labor of love, it is a hard life to live. Performers are called gypsies for a reason. You travel the world over, from gig to gig. Usually you make just enough to make a living and get to your next gig. The more marketable you are, the better chance you have at surviving in the industry.
The best advice is keep your head held high, and learn to take rejection. Never forget, chances are you will never make it big, and if you don't love the work, then theatre is no life for you. The industry is more about who you know, and luck than it is about talent, but talent is a close third. Learn everything you can and get a good agent. Start small, aim big. Best of luck.
