When I first moved over here I stayed at this fabulous B&B!
The Arran House Hotel is close to everything and reasonably priced, especially for central London.

Most recently stayed at the Park Inn - Hyde Park. Nice location across the park from Royal Albert Hall. Five minute walk to the tube. Slightly larger rooms and much better food than similarly priced budget hotels in that area and in the Russel Square area. We've stayed at other Park Inn hotels in London and Berlin and haven't been disappointed yet.

I was in London for a two-week theatre course this winter and we stayed at the Harlingford Hotel in Bloomsbury, an adorable little family-owned place. I enjoyed it very much.

I have friends who stay at the Strand Palace whenever they're in London. Also, here is a site where you might find some good prices on hotels or bed and breakfasts.

I have stayed at the Cherry Court Hotel which is about 5 minutes from Victoria Station and 10 minutes from Buckingham Palace. It is basic but very clean. The breakfast is nothing to write home about but you can get a full English breakfast at Weatherspoons in Victoria Station for about £4.00

If you want something a little more up-market then try The Rubens which is right across the road from Buckingham Palace.

I stayed this past January at the St. Giles Hotel on Tottenham Court Road. It's a budget, business hotel, but it definitely serves its purpose. Located right next door to the Dominion Theater where WE WILL ROCK YOU is playing, the St. Giles is a 10 minute walk from Leicester Square, 15 to the Strand and 20 to the South Bank.

We are staying at the Hazlitt Hotel 4 Firth St, this June, 44 207 434 1771. It is just north of Shaftesbury St and couldn't be more convenient for Theatreland. We have tried to stay there before but it was always booked. It is well reviewed, comfortable, boutique sized but not that expensive for London. (Supposedly where theatre folks stay?!) Previously we have stayed at the Radisson Edwardian Hampshire Hotel, www.radissonedwardian.co.uk Leicester Square +44 20 7839 9399, which is also walking distance to all the West End theatres. It is more corporate hotel in feel but rooms and service were fine. We also stay at the Shaftesbury Hotel www.shaftesburyhotel.co.uk which is also right in Theatreland. This hotel is unassuming from the outside, no fancy lobby, but the rooms were nice, as were the people. There was, at least 2 years ago, a complementary breakfast buffet on the floor below the lobby.
If you are staying longer there is a service that rents apartments by the week and has a few south of the British museum which are within walking distance of the theatres.
We have always opted to stay walking distance, traveling by tube only on the days we see something at the Sadler Wells, or Apollo Victoria. Then we visit the other areas of London on days we don't have a matinee, hint www.walks.com. When you get to picking restaurants give a shout.
This site has lots of info

Posted: 5/12/09 at 10:23amMy family came to visit me years ago when I studied in England and they stayed at the St. Giles. It was really nice. I was not studying in London so I needed accomodations; unfortunately, there was no room at the St. Giles. I stayed in the Generator, a really cool hostel near the British Museum. When I go back to London, hopefully in 2010, I will be staying there. It is very clean and includes a continental breakfast and internet service is available downstairs in the lobby. (It was free when I was there, don't know if that's changed.) It would leave more money for theater tix plus some shopping at Harrod's. I highly recommend it (and I'm really picky.)

Posted: 5/12/09 at 11:55amI did my air and hotel as a package through expedia.com when I went in 2008. I stayed at what's now the Grosvenor but was at booking the Thistle Victoria...right at Victoria Station. It was ultra convenient, and not that expensive (even as part of a package). Breakfast was included with it. I was literally just a couple of blocks away from Billy Elliiot and Wicked and only a tube stop from other theatres. I really liked it ~ found it clean and quiet and very nice.

Posted: 5/12/09 at 12:06pmI'm in London a few times a year for theatre. I've stayed at the Strand Palace when I got a good rate. Small rooms, but good location. There are many good options in the Bloomsbury area, and that's about a 15 minute walk from Leicester square. I've stayed in both Hyatt's in Paddinton as well. There are often good deals on really nice hotels there. It's not walking distance, but 10 minutes on the tube to Picadilly. I usually go for Bloomsbury if I can find a decent hotel at a good price. It's walking distance to most theatres, and I don't need to worry about catching the last tube to get home if I want to go out after a show.

I'm going to London and Paris at the end of August for 2 weeks. So far I have tickets for "Jersey Boys," "Priscilla," and "Sister Act." When I went 2 years ago, I stayed at The Waldorf Hilton, right in the middle of the theatre district. Fantastic, fantastic location. The hotel is gorgeous - an old, iconic building that has been completely, painstainkingly restored to it's original glory. It was right next door to "Drowsy," which I saw.
On this trip, I'll be back at The Waldorf.

Posted: 5/12/09 at 8:13pmIf you are going at the right time of the year (and it sounds like you are), I would look into staying in one of the vacant university dorms. There are a number of options that you can find online. I stayed in a vacant London School of Economics dorm and it was very convenient and cheap for what you get.
