Michael Riedel in today's NY Post writes about Tobey Maguire dropping out of the upcoming revival of The Glass Menagerie. Anyone else relieved with the news?
And while on the subject, anyone know what happened to Ethan Hawke, who was rumored for the role of Tom once upon a time? I was thinking he would be a good choice.

Posted: 12/1/04 at 1:20pmSame here, Matt. *ducks* Y'know, I think I liked him better before he was in Spider-Men. He never quite carried those movies for me. Updated On: 12/1/04 at 01:20 PM

Riedel writes about a meeting/reading with director David Leveaux, that morphed into something of an audition.

Posted: 12/1/04 at 1:21pmI think his acting has never really been tapped into his full potential...Love to see him something dramatic on stage or comedic...Lend Me a Tenor maybe...

Posted: 12/1/04 at 1:23pmTobey is a great actor. Take a look at WONDER BOYS or THE ICE STORM.

Posted: 12/1/04 at 1:24pmOh, right! I forgot about Hurlyburly. Pity though, about Glass Menagerie. Something poetic about Hawke, and he's a genuine presence.

Posted: 12/1/04 at 1:25pmSaw both of those, Matt and he's a mediocre actor in his finest moments and looks like a big toe.

Posted: 12/1/04 at 1:28pmWell, I don't know if I'd go that far, but I find him a bit remote as an actor. I'm not sure if he'd register much more than blankness onstage.

Yeah, I'm not sure about how well his type of acting would play in a 1200 seat house.
The original press release had Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard rumored to be in talks for this production as the Gentlemen Caller and Tom, respectively, (with Natalie Portman mentioned as a possibility for Laura). Then the next press release omitted Leonard (I think he's doing a series or something) and mentioned Hawke for Tom (with Portman still "in talks"). Then the very next week, Hawke announced he was doing Hurlyburly -- leaving him, Leonard and Portman completely out of the picture.
Now with Maguire dropping out after apparently clashing with and/or feeling insulted by Leveaux and the production team, I'm starting to wonder just what in the world in going on behind the scenes of this show. I can't remember seeing so many big names rumored for and then suddenly dropping out of a production before. What's REALLY going on?

Posted: 12/1/04 at 1:43pm......AAANNND! Because I was born to split hairs....do we REALLY need a mounting of GLASS MENAGERIE? I love it, too, but....I'd save my $$ for THE PILLOWMAN. New stuff! New! New! New!

Posted: 12/1/04 at 1:46pmBut Jessica Lange, Borstal. Jessica...LANGE. I saw her in STREETCAR and was absolutely mesmerized. She could read the dictionary onstage and I'd cry.

Yeah, I'd say that Menagerie is one of those shows that is welcome any time it comes around.

Tobey is very boring.
and Natalie Portman? The last couple of movies I've seen her in were fine, but I still have some serious doubts.
